This is a serious question. I am not trying to be gross. I just would like to have feedback.

I cannot remember when it started but for as long as I can remember, I bite the skin around my nails. Sometimes too deep and I have to wear a bandaid. I cant link it to much of anything. I dont do it when Im depressed or angry. Sad... nothing like that. Maybe b/c Im bored? Im so baffled.

I personally dont know anyone else who does this: however, I did read ONCE in a magazine, a girl wrote in about her guyfriend who did it. So I know that I am not totally alone, but I wanted to see what was out there.

Do you? Know someone? What do you think?

It most likely started due to nervousness as a child, and now has progressed into a severe habitual occurrence. However, it's also due to stress or boredom. I wouldn't label it OCD, and neither would a practicing psychologist. Basically, you have developed a very bad habit which needs to be broken.

Unlearn what you have learned.

I did it for years - picking and chewing the skin around my fingernails. I finally outgrew it and started taking pride in the ways my hands look. Now I have my nails manicured professionally once a week and I am seldom tempted to put my fingers in my mouth. I started to notice what I thouiht about woen that I saw with beautiful manicured nails. I thought they looked smart, well put together, and competent - things I wanted for myself. That was enough for me. Now I chew gum!

It's not OCD and if it weren't for the severity it'd fall into normal bad habits catagories. You just have a really really bad habit.

it's done all the time.. unless you can afford weekly manicures, you're going to experience additional skin around your nails... just be careful not to draw blood when you are "grooming"
