Too many ways to name...usually, when the kidney goes in a dog, that's about it I'm afraid. I think that most dogs would inevitably get it if they live long enough.
I've had quite a few animals go through our family over the years...kidney failure usually just comes with old age.

Kidney disease can be caused by many factors, but most of all is is genetic. Lyme Disease however is a major cause of kidney failure dogs, at least in high lyme disease rated areas. Dogs respond well to IV fluid treatment, but if the disease has progressed to far (as in the case with many lyme deisease kidney nephritis patients) the damage is unfortunately irreparable. A few large institutions have been performing kidney transplants and dialysis for quite a while now and is yet another option however expensive as one would expect.

The kidneys work less effectively as the dog ages.
Some things can cause damage to the kidneys. Antifreeze is poision to dogs but what it does is crystalized the tissue in the kidney and the dog really dies from kidney failure.
It can help to feed a special diet made for dogs with kidney problems.
Most times there is not going to be a cure but you can maintain the situation and feed a good diet to help.
