Is it true that if you were abused as a child in any way and you don't realize it wasn't your fault you're likely to do the same to your own kids?

It can be a cycle and something everyone should take very seriously. Sexual, physical, mental- no matter what type of abuse. Victims who don't deal with their past are often fated to inflict similar abuse on their own children.

In some cases, an adult survivor won't repeat abuse his children or other victims, but instead will turn the anger and frustration inward and become depressed. These types of survivors, are more likely to neglect their children than abuse them, and they show an alarming inability to detect when their child may be suffering abuse at the hands of someone else.

Adult survivors may be blind to abuse because they've repressed their own memories of it. Some experts call this "betrayal trauma," and explain that the cruelties a victim is most likely to forget may not be the most terrifying, but the ones that involve being betrayed by someone they love and trust.

The best way to break the cycle is in coming to terms with the mistreatment suffered as a child. Ususally this is met through therapy.

I would never heart a child the way my father did to me and my brothers and sister. So no. You don't always follow in the same footsteps and your not more likely.

P.S. To sweetiepoo...Where on earth did you get your info?? It's completely wrong. In your saying, I should be abusing my daughter. Have you know that I have never beaten my girl. Some of us realize that our parents were wrong and don't repeat it.

For some people it's true. I know people who were abused as kids and they would never dream of doing the same to their kids.

i believe that if you were abused as a child you would go the extra mile to protect your children and not let any harm come to them but i suppose others could see it differently and if they did think they abuse was there own fault cause self harm or even harm to their children (harming their children would hurt them)

i hope you understand what i am saying and i hope that it is just a curious question and you didnt get abused!!

Often we suppress our emotions because they are too painful. When ever someone is abused they have a tendency to believe that they caused the abuser to behave that way by their wrong actions. We tend to learn our parenting skills from our parents and we will mimic their parenting unless we become parents in midlife.

sadly, yes. since we are a product of the environment we grow up in... we learn parenting and social skills from those that raised us... those that were abused as children very frequently display the same behavior as adults.

No. I think it would be the opposite as you would never want to see abuse happen with your own children.
