I fly between 80-100 times a year (mostly for work) and just about every single time I find the cheapest flight from the airline directly. What I always do is I look for flights on either www.expedia.com or www.travelocity.com, find out which airline has the cheapest flight, and then I go to that airline's website and pick those flights and almost every time, I get the same price directly from the airline. Plus, almost all of those websites charge a $5 or more "booking fee" so it is actually cheaper to book directly through the airline. Most airlines have gotten smart and now guarantee that you will find the cheapest prices directly from the airline as well. I know that American Airlines does this (I fly with them fairly often) and many others do as well. One more thing: Most of the "low-fare" airlines (i.e. Southwest and JetBlue) ONLY sell their tickets direct - you can't get them through one of the websites like Expedia. They don't fly overseas though... only a couple of Caribbean destinations, just to keep in mind though.

Also: If by "overseas" you mean Europe, winter actually is considerably cheaper than summer. I flew to Ireland last year for 5 days at the beginning of December, for a round trip price of under $300 (on American Airline's website). The holidays are probably more expensive.... but later in the winter is cheaper too, i.e. January and February. (Still winter but not the holiday season).

Em, maybe because it is impossible to answer without knowing where you will travel from, to, and how long you need to stay. Edit your question to include this very important info, then I think you will get some decent answers.

well your looking at flying during the holidays, so its hard to find cheap tickets, especially oversees, they will be hight no matter where during the holidays, so if you plan on going get them now they will only go up, try not to go on weekends and try to go later at night, they tend to be cheaper than, good luck and don't wait to get them trust me they will go really high.
