I live in Florida, and about 8 months out of the year it's almost unbearably hot. I'm born and raised here and yet I've never acclimated to the heat and humidity.

But as I took my 4 year old to school this morning, I was in a better mood than I've been in for months! It was 49 degrees. I had a sweatshirt and jeans on and the cool whip of the wind invigorated me no end - even though both girls had a restless night's sleep (thank you cold and flu season).

I watched my oldest head off to join her class. She was dressed in her usual blue polo and khaki bottoms - but today she wore a white long-sleeved collared shirt underneath the shirt and long pants instead of shorts. I've never seen her in this uniform before - and it struck me that another season has changed. Another first is gone.

Isn't it funny the firsts you can find with your children?

Anyway, so my favorite part of living on the west central coast of Florida is that I can be assured that sometime in October, my birth month, the weather will take a dip to this phenomenal weather. I feel like a new woman. As I walk through this chilly weather, I remember my days as a young girl walking to the bus stop, cold to the bone and laughing the whole way. I get a sense of something that I can't place, that brings a smile and a laugh to me with no provocation whatsoever - it's just what I feel. I don't need a funny movie or a silly song. It just feels GOOD!

And I love to watch my children discover the joy of a changing season...

I live in Florida too (Tallahassee) and have for the last 16 years. What a climate shock moving here from Colorado where there was beautiful weather and my hair actually did what I wanted it to do. I don't care for the heat and humidity here either and was loving it this morning when I looked at the thermometer outside and saw that it was 44 degrees! I love days like this when it is cool enough to actually make you feel alive! It's sad, but I can't think of anything that I actually love about where I live and if I could get my husband to move somewhere where it's not so hot most of the year I would go in a heartbeat. That will never happen though since my husband loves the heat and would rather be further south where it stays even warmer throughout the year.

I just had my first baby in July and was hating that it was too hot to take her out in her stroller for walks. It's so nice now that we can go outside without feeling like we're going to melt. It will probably be 85 degrees again in another week or two though.

I have "firsts" with my daughter every day at this age. They really grow up fast don't they?

I guess the best thing about where I live is that we have lots of family close by - sure is comforting with a new baby.

I live in Florida as well and I dislike it! My husband is military so we are stationed here--not by choice but by chance. I grew up overseas (Germany, England, and Panama) to be specific. I find it hard anywhere in the states to find something to do. I enjoy seeing historical sites and going to museums. There is nothing much in the US (apart from Washington DC, Philadelphia and some northern states) that really makes me think about history. This is my own bias though--I enjoy European history far better then American.

Anyway for the question. The best part in my community is the safety. I know there isn't a sex offender living next to me. I know there isn't a serial rapist two blocks down. I know I can leave my door unlocked while I'm home and no one will come and murder me. I like my community because although we aren't all from the same background, state, or even race--we at least have the military in common. We are family--not just neighbors. People in the military seem more friendly and it's easier to make friends.

I remember when I was still living with my parents and moved out into the "real" world I was so scared. I found out that six sex offenders worked with me (on one of those websites) and I couldn't believe it. There were several things I didn't even realize were possible--even though my parents explained them to me before.

There are negative and positive things that come into play when living in a guarded community and I believe the positive outweigh the negative by far!
