Have you ever seen a mustard seed? It is so small! Sometimes our faith can be small too; sometimes we are so used to relying on other means to arrive at conclusions (rational thought, etc.) that the idea of faith seems scary. (Faith isn't anti-rational, but it takes something different from rationality) But even if you have just a little teeny bit of faith, that is okay: even this little bitty bit of faith can grow into great things!
You don't have to have faith in all things. To become a Christian does not mean that overnight you believe all the things that you have heard that Christians believe. Instead of being hung up in what you don't believe in, just look at what you do believe in (love?), don't crowd that part with disbelief of other things (creationism?), and allow that part (love for this example) to grow.

The mustard seed is super small, that grows into a big tree.
Just like God can turn someone who only has a mustard seed sized faith in their hearts, he can turn them to be very faithful and fruitful.

the mustard seed was the smallest thing known to the people of the time Jesus gave this example. He explained that faith even as small as the seed could do might things. Faith in God is such a small part of the relationship God wants with us and that faith can grow into a great tree meaning that God will make us what He wants for His glory. faith causes us to trust God as He grows us in Him to fulfill His purpose with which we were created.

The mustard seed is the smallest of all seeds. Our faith is like a seed which starts off small, then over time, the seed turns into a tree and becomes such a huge tree from such a small seed.

I love this story so much
I have a necklace that I wear everyday that has small mustard seed in it that reminds me.
It tells us that all we need is enough faith that is the size of a mustard seed (which is super duper tiny) nothing is impossible

It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air perched in its branches

A mustard seed is just about the tiniest seed there is. The fact that it becomes anything is a marvel in itself.

to add on to Ratbrain's comments, it's important to remember that in the middle east, mustard actually does grow in the form of huge trees, even though in other parts of the world it's a little shrub.

This story is an excellent example of what a good teacher Jesus was. Here he uses hyperbole to illustrate his point that faith is very important for a Christian. If we have faith, God will give us the strength needed to accomplish anything.
