I was wondering if anyone knew a way to deal with anxiety on your own. Maybe some self help technique's. I dont really want to take the medicine they give me, because im very afraid of side effects. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Maybe a story of your battle with anxiety. Thank You

I had some issues with anxiety and anxiety attacks for a few months following a trauma as a child. I never told anyone I was having trouble, so I had to learn to deal with it on my own. This might not work for you- I was reacting to a specific stimuli regarding a specific event which I really was healing from normally, it wasn't a long-term thing. Anyway, what I did when my heart started racing was to play little games with myself. I'd take long, slow breaths and count things, like the number of colors I could see, or the number of words beginning with S in the last song I had heard. This didn't help the much to ease the feelings that were already there, but it kept it from escalating and eased the fear that I would somehow lose control and have a complete breakdown. I'd also focus on keeping moving, playing little games with the sidewalk squares (each foot in it once only, no stepping on cracks). Eventually, I healed the rest of the way and didn't need this anymore, and now when I experience normal everyday anxiety I just breath consciously and focus on relaxing my shoulder muscles, guiding myself as if I were a yoga instrcutor (top of the head toward the sky, shoulders down and back). I feel posture is important to mood. If you smoke, have a cigarette. If you don't, don't start.

If you are just generally anxious, try switching to caffeine free herbal tea instead of soda or coffee. Take time at convenient points in your day to just be still. Yoga in the morning could be a big help, as could some quiet stretching and contemplation time at night, so you go to bed loose and relaxed.

I think a lot of people have temporary issues with anxiety at verious points in their life. The things I've suggested are good for the one or two attacks most people will have at some point. If you have a longer-term problem, you should talk to a professional. Yahoo advice won't be able to fix it.

Anxiety issues affect everyone. One of the first things that will help you relax is to forgive yourself for having them. This is the first step to dealing with them effectively.
Although you don't state which medications you have been prescribed, I am guessing that these side effects of which you speak are those which are only possibilities rather than personally experienced. My advice to you is to try some of the medication you have been prescribed and, if it doesn't work in a satisfactory way, ask the doctor for something different. Yes, this is a bit frustrating, but keep in mind that your anxiety is feeding this frustration so it requires a few deep breaths and some conviction. Things work differently for different people, often without any apparent explanation.
The real key is recognizing the sources of your anxiety. Although discovering this will not make it go away, at least you can address the root of the issues you are facing. Many of us are placed in very difficult situations in life and the key is to deal with them effectively without wearing yourself down over a long period.
In conjunction with the meds, should you decide to try some, I suggest a breathing exercise or two. Tai Chi, available on tape from your local library would be a very good stress and anxiety reducer. Meditation also works well.
Lastly, I suggest that you put some thought into the foundation of your spirituality. Although I don't suggest that you immediately make out your will to Pat Robertson, it is important that you find a church home where you can be accepted. Part of relieving your anxiety includes being able to give all of your stress and care to Him. For some reason or other, most of us struggle with that every week, but it’s the best therapy you can get.

Sorry however staying busy isn't going to "medication" nor dispose of your nervousness. That could be like telling you to only pull your self up by way of your bootstraps or in different phrases "recover from it". Anxiety is a truly sickness and demands certain awareness earlier than it will get worse. I could particularly advocate you looking for a moment opinion. You won't always must take medicinal drugs however a few style of treatment demands to be sought out so you'll get to the basis or what's inflicting the nervousness. There are a few very moderate, non addictive medicinal drugs to be had for nervousness similar to Buspar however just a Dr. will probably be equipped to let you know what's first-class for you. I do wish you are going to get the aid you wish to have and deserve rather of ready to just must get aid later whilst matters are potentially worse. I desire you the first-class~

I have anxiety depression as well and I do take pills that they give me but there is a way that you can help yourself deal with it and still take the medication to treat the problem.

First off you have to take the medication! (trust me I know what anxiety attacks feel like and I don't like the way they feel so the medicine is to calm you down and block of the enzyme that causes you to have those anxiety attacks) The medicine has worked on me wonderfully every now in then when I do miss that dose I do have an attack but that as you know is a mental illness. Of course you don't have to deal with it as such because I have refused to believe that I cannot function or what not even though I do take the medication. But you must understand even if you don't like to take them believe me there are reason and you have to know what your own body is telling you and not what the doctor is telling you because 9 times out of 10 there in for the money. But take them! and to deal with it do deep breathing exercises, talk walks, listen to soft music, Read the bible! and most of all relax. One other thing while you have anxiety attacks don't do any more work then you have too! Let me explain if you are doing something already and try to fit all of those other things that you have to do into that one you are basically putting more stress on you which also cause you to have an attack.
I still fight with my battle of anxiety attacks/ panic disorder but I call to my Lord and Savior for help too, and that has made a big difference in what is happening. So that has helped along with the deep breathing excercise. It hasn't been fun, I thought for a long period of time that I had it undercontrol, I stopped taking my medicine back in 1991 and knew I was diagnoised with anxiety disorder I did well for a while till in 2002 my mother passed and that sent me overboard! Of course during that time I was also going through other matters which made my condition this time around much more serious. I had shortness of breath, High blood pressure, tightness of the chest, couldn't sleep at night, all of a sudden I would have an extreme emotion of fear! and always had shaky feelings in my legs, tension in my shoulders and back....Well I think I have covered everything just to let you know that you are not alone in this either and believe me if my moms doctors would have diagnoised my mothers condition correctly I believe she would have been alive. (when she died in 2002 she had high blood pressure cause by stress!)
Stay calm and take the deep breathing excercises, and take that medicine.
Mental illness in no game to play around with!

I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder. It was aweful. If you go to GNC and buy "Inositol" in studies (there haven't been many), they have been amazing results, like SSRI's without side effects and without withdrawal (it is a natural body suppliment). I also take Magnesium (they say it slows down your heart rate), and I also used to Niacinimide...it is natural...they say it has benzo qualities (Xanax). I take Paxil, so I must admit I cheat, but I did a lot of research myself. You may look online for REAL Kava Kava her suppliments. The script that helps me is called a Beta Blocker (Toprol), it is like anti-adrenalin rush. It blocks them. I have been wonderful ever since. But I understand your not wanting scripts. Go to GNC.

I can recommend a good book that I found helpful when I suffered from anxiety.its called 'more help for your nerves' by claire weeks.if you could afford a therapist, cognitive behavioural therapy is a a treatment for anxiety and other mental health related disorders and is supposed to be helpful with long-term benefits.I totally understand why you want to try something else before medication.good luck
