If a priest can tell you that you don't need to frequently offer help to a needy person because you will only make him not work to earn a living, do you think that this can inspire, nourish, and satisfy your spiritual desires?

If the members themselves make you sceptical about your belief, then be sceptical. It's good to be sceptical, because it makes you ask questions. Frankly, if you belong to a non-centralised church, then you are free to ignore the Priests as much as you want, especially if they talk complete rubbish. They have no real authority over you. They only guide you.
