My niece is eight years old and is still being breast fed! I'm not trying to put down my sister in law but I can't see why my niece hasn't been weaned yet as she gets all the goodness she needs from proper food. I asked my sister in law and she said that it gives my niece comfort........surely she can get comfort from kisses and cuddles instead? Your thoughts and opinions please!

For the record my niece does eat proper food and is only breast fed just before she goes to bed. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks its wrong!

Girllllll!!!!!
You have to be kidding me, for real, still breast feeding at the age 8 years old? I knew this female who had boys (two of them) and her youngest was still being breast feed at the old ripe age of five years old and she too didn't think it wasn't anything wrong with it but it really is, it keeps that child from growing up properly, you know how to deal with situations, no normal 8 year old should be laying up in their mother's lap with an tit in their mouth, that's for real, have anyone else tried to speak with your sister-in-law? heck what about your brother, the child's father, the mother's husband, I mean may be you all should could to her as a whole family and confront her with this and just explain that it's and issue that needs to be handled, you know, she says it's comfort for the 8 yr-old well, her mother needs to find another way to comfort her daughter like the rest of us mothers in the world, I have an 9 year-old and a 11 yr-old and what would it look like with me having this child that is almost the same size as I am hanging on my tit? If you all do not help her now, then in another year she will be having that problem.....Good Luck to you all.............

The World Health Organisation says, "The targe range for complementary feeding is generally taken to be 6 to 24 months of age, even though breastfeeding may continue beyone two years.........Breastfeeding continues to make an important nutritional contribution well beyond the first year of life."

It's not socially acceptable in our culture. Perhaps you could tell her how you feel using appropriate conflict resolution techniques. Hopefully you can continue to have a close relationship. It would be a shame if this to in the way of your relationship. There are much worse things going on in the world. Like 8yr olds taking guns to school. I'd say this girl probably isn't doing that.

I think it's sick to have a child that old still sucking my breasts. If your niece had been bottle fed, would she still offer a bottle to an 8 year old to comfort her? That's beyond a mother-daughter bond, it's disgusting.

Sounds like mommy is the one enjoying this, since she's the one who has the say on when it stops. The quality of the milk she is producing probably isn't very good 8 years on, unless she's had another baby in the meantime.
To quote Mrs Beeton, no child with a full set of teeth should still be breastfed.
Sounds like you SIL has some pretty odd issues...

It has been proven that children breast fed for longer have a slightly higher intellegence...but 8 years old is a little insane, I don't mean to be harsh but your sister in law needs some serious help, is this her first child, either you or her husband needs to confront her on this before it gets out of hand....

Yuck...I read an article about a family like that who still was breastfeeding her 13 year old son. This kid should be thinking about girls and school not his mom's boob when its lunch time.

So I am opposed...completely. Put yourself in those shoes, picture yourself at 8 when cartoons, your bike and favorite stuffed animal are your world. Could you imagine suckling on your Mom at that age?

I think it just sets up a whole pile of trouble futher on down the road.

I heard kids up to 10 still breast feed and i really dont think that is right. The mother should atleast pump the milk out her breast and put it in a cup. If she doesnt stop now, who knows she might still be doing that till the age of 12.

Yea, that is weird. A child should not be being breast fed after she has teeth (no longer than a year or two, anyway).

You need to tell your sister-in-law to stop this. How long is she planning to keep this up for? Little Britian springs to mind. I can understand a boy wanting to keep it going for as long as he can, even as grown men we're still trying to get our faces in the cleavage, though its not because we're hungry.
I think when your niece grows older she may feel very embarrassed about it. Your sister-in-law needs to think how her daughter will feel about it when she hits her teens, this could scar her emotionally down the line... unless she's still asknig for "Bitty" when she's a grown woman.
And on another note, Eww.

Nope that is not right I would say there are some serious problems there and both your sister in law and your niece should see a doctor
