Stage 1 breast cancer. But if chemo causes nausea, poss. vomiting, how can you gain weight, except that I understand you don't have much energy either, therefore, not working out.

Usually people lose weight during chemo. I know I did...

The only reason I know of people gaining weight during chemo is when they use Dexamethason to prevent sickness. This drug can apparently make you really hungry. I used other anti sickness medication during my chemo (Kytril).

Good luck! I'll be thinking of you.

I too lost weight during chemo 2 years ago. I have head that some people do gain but I never met anyone that did and I know quite a few people who have undergone chemotherapy. In my experience even when I did feel like eating nothing tasted like it should other than potatoes, tomatoes and eggs. Everything else tasted metallic, like chewing aluminum foil, which we used to use as kids to pretend we had braces.

I don't know where you heard that? I certainly lost a bunch of weight with my chemo treatments. I ate Zofran like candy (LOL) Even after I was done, it took a few weeks for me to be able to eat anything and keep it down.

You are afraid you will gain weight?? Weight loss is the usual side effect due to the loss of appetite. When my father had breast cancer (yes, my father -- men have boobs too) he had a much diminished appetite. Certain flavors, texture and types of food he used to eat became unappealing. The nausea didn't help either, but they have meds for that.

Talk with your oncologist. He or she will probably have advice or can direct you to a dietitian or nutritionist who can help you prepare.

As a family member of a breast cancer survivor, I wish you all the best. Just remember that attitude beats cancer. Go kick cancer's butt.

i can only answer this by third person...my father was diagnose with lung cancer and had to to radiation and chemo. he actually was told he would be loosing weight and they would be keeping a close eye on his weight lost. the meds effected his swallowing ability and yes he did loose weight. drastically, which worried them. 4 more pounds and they would have put him on an iv. while the body is being invaded with the treatment to help, it was also depleting vit/minerals to help his recovery. the same scenario happened with a friend that went through thyroid cancer...talk to your doctors again. there's rough road ahead, but take care of yourself. and my prayers are with you right now
