Here's my theory: We have the technology today to help people who would normally NOT be able to conceive, actually conceive and have babies. This technology involves more than one fertilized egg at a time to increase the odds that at least one will implant successfully and become a viable pregnancy. Many times two eggs will become viable, and couples who have been trying very hard for a long time (and spending a LOT of money) are blessed with two (and sometimes...MORE...:). Therefore, the increase in multiple births.

1. Because of fertility treatments
2. Because there are just more people in the world so you've got more chance of twins being born!

Fertility drugs and other fertility treatments are to blame for most of the increase in multiple births. Also, many women are delaying motherhood until their thirty's and forty's and the older the mother the higher risk of twinning.

It's not that they are having more twins...it's just that more twins are surviving. There is also much more media coverage now than a century ago and therefore you hear about more twins than you would have then.

People now a days use in-vitro to get pregnant, which is artificial insemination, and a lot of the time, more than one implanted egg survive. (They put like 5 in you, but most die, sometimes all... sometimes 2 or 3 survive). Hope this helps you.

Probably because more people use fertility drugs and other treatments to get pregnant, which then increases their chances at a multiple birth.
