Yes. They can still be friends. Islam encourage communications between people but there is a guide on how to do that properly to avoid complication concerning man women relationship.
Boy and girl can be friends but the margin is set when they reached puberty. This even include brothers and sisters. Both of them must separate eg. not to sleep in the same room. The reason is biogically both will start to wonder of their own body when they reached that stage. Puberty not only changes the body but also changes how they think of the other sex. Its not as simple as you think. Even being GAY in later life is also can be detected and prevented at these stage so we must be aware.
So to ans your ques is for you to start separating them when they reach puberty. Before that they are allowed to mingle and play among themself.
The rule is Brother and Sisters is allowed to touch one another(basic touching like working together, doing house chores ect.) even after puberty till their growing up. But private parts is FORBIDEN to be touch or even seen!! Even mother is not allowed to see her son's privates. Same apply for DAD to daughter. At puberty they MUST be educated to respect the opposite sex. Dirty conversation or even jokes is not encourage between them. That is the rule of family.
After puberty they are not allowed to touch ANYBODY of their opposite sex other then their direct family even their cousins hands. (still can converse tho)
You may think Islam is soo bloody tough to follow but this is the basis of humans behavior. If you undertand biology you know what i mean.
Then again ISLAM is so tough you may say. we cannot do this we cannot do that. Do you know that muslims can eat Pork and drink wine? That if it backed by ONLY emergency reasons.

may be you are off limits or you are in the limits i think its OK if you are in limits
Juss ask your heart dont bother yourself or strict your feelings
it doesnt mean you are free.
you would like to do what your heart happily agree to do.
but lastly keep these all aside tell me if you dont marry that girl or boy
in this case would you like your real spouse such type which is previously involved in other person.
Or you would like such partener who is NEVER interested in another not even as friend!

Be careful, if she is islamic (& her father is, of course) then you'd better not think or Look at her with lust or else he'll cut of your dick. It is the way of Islam, even though Allah doesn't say to do this. Allah says forgive.
