Northern Monkey ~
In my opinion, that's the best age. Your mind is fairly focused and you have a pretty good idea of what's involved. The worst thing that happened to me in my childhood was being 8 and drug to the gym and having to spar, my mind was on being a kid and not fighting. I had almost 65 fights by the time I turned 11 years old, by the time I was 16, I thought that I never wanted to smell another gym as long as I lived, but it was too late I was hooked.
17 years old is the perfect age! There's so much that your mind can absorb while you're focused. The edge in confidence and the manner in which you carry yourself will be the first things everyone notices about you.
Go for it, and be the very best that you can be and everything will turn out just fine. Good luck.

No, but honestly, in the boxing world you may have missed some valuable time by not starting at an earlier age and getting all the "junior" amateur experience. You need a good, caring trainer--be careful that u arent used to box with someone that is experienced that needs a "body". That means someone that doesnt know boxing but it provides a moving, fighting back target for them. Be aware of any coach that puts u in the ring immediately to "see what u got". If you have never boxed, they already know what u got--nothing..and unfortunately u need more than heart. Heart is great, but brains is better. Look for a coach that will focus on u getting in shape, and showing u basic boxing from the feet up. Showing u first how to jab and how to keep your hands up. Protection is important, because if u cant win, you can at least protect yourself. Its not gonna be easy, but you can do it. Wanted to be truthful with you. If you live in a large city, it may be easy to find a gym, but be on the alert for what's really out there in one of the most dirty businesses out there. If youre tall, your best tactic is gonna be using a stinging, sharp, deadly jab. Check out Tommy Hearns' jab (not him getting knocked out). It must be so deadly that no one can get close to you, thats your objective. Let your jab be your bread and butter..but develop your right hand so in case someone does get in, you can put them to sleep for their mistake. Be focused, serious, and make your late start work for you by being smart. Get boxing tapes of fighters that are tall. That will help u see that tall, slim guys dont ususally slug, they are usually smart boxers that use their brains--set up punches.

not sure what your question is, are you asking if it is too old to start, or too young to start? I'd say neither. It depends on your level of athleticism, your heart, your natural ability and such. There are many professional boxers who have successful careers well into their 30's, some even in their 40's, so it certainly isn't too old.

I agree that boxing is a very rough sport, and can be tough on the head and body, especially for someone who is still growing. You can certainly train, and box using head gear and larger gloves to protect your self more until you're a little older and more physically and mentally ready for the harsh world of professional boxing.

Good luck

Sorry you are able to on no account be'sturdy at it with out sparring. bagwork and shadow boxing and technique drills none of it quite works in a combat with out being utilized into sparring before regrettably. you may get sturdy at htting a bag and greater wholesome etc. yet no longer sturdy at boxing itself. As on your age it isn't any project. Boxers can start up quite lots later than different activities, quite these days while it is way less standard there is way less compeition on the suitable. you are able to start up late and nevertheless make it to suitable stages. notwithstanding as quickly as returned you will need sparring. there isn't any incorrect way around it. I even have seen such quite some adult males get wiped sparkling up in genuine fights who've watched each and all the video clips and worked out on the bag for years with out sparring. in actuality a number of them did even worse by way of fact they have been watching for they could be boxers by now. they could have been greater suitable forgetting their punching bag boxing and in simple terms tried to kick the different guy in the balls instead. in case you want some thing to look after your self with and can't prepare at a club very in lots of circumstances you're greater suitable of gaining knowledge of the thank you to do a double leg takedown in wrestling and a rear bare BJJ choke. those issues could nicely be discovered nicely adequate to take aout the commonplace guy after basically some training.
