Hello Sam,

You have made the first move, so well done you. Your BMI to be a healthy weight needs to be between 20 - 25. So what you need to do for starters is have a goal that you can reach. Do not think that you want to get to a BMI of 25 right away. If your BMI is 39 have your goal for a BMI of 36 in one month and so on. You are already doing exercise which is good. It will get your body used to moving and using calories it doesn't need.
A good diet for somebody your age is the GI diet. It is a balanced healthy eating diet. It helps with portion sizes and allows you to control the kinds of foods you are eating. The Internet is a brilliant source of information but i think it would be better if you and someone you trust went to your local bookshop or WH Smiths. There are many recipe books available for the GI Diet. Also when you are feeling a bit low about the weight you have a book you can pick up and look through at any time. If you get a book called The GI Diet written by Rick Gallop, it explains the diet fully and gives you lists of foods you can eat any of, lists of foods you can have occasionally and lists of foods to avoid altogether. Use this eating plan and drink at least three litres of plain water a day. No diet drinks and nothing with caffeine in it. You will lose weight at a steady and healthy pace. Well done Sam, on being mature and sensible about your situation. Don't be tempted to crash diet or anything, your doctor can give you a healthy eating plan. Exercise is a great thing to help you, and you should still be able to eat nice things if you exercise regularly. It will tone you up and make you fitter. Perhaps you could do the trampoline twice a day and the gym a little more often, when you feel fitter.

Groups such as WeightWatchers work for some people, but I think they can be expensive and they try to sell you their books, foods etc. If you can join a local group of people losing weight, perhaps through your doctor or local swimming pool or something, there is always extra incentive when you have other people encouraging you.

Good luck :-)

Well you did well joining the gym, only I would try to get there three times a week instead of once. Walking to school is great as well! Now for the hardest part, your eating habits! You need to change the way you eat and like someone else mentioned, Weight Watchers is a great choice. If you could go with someone that would be great, but its just a great program to help you make better choices and eat the right things without cutting everything from your diet, you can still eat things you like while on Weight Watchers, thats why it worked for me! I joined Weight Watchers in April and I have lost 55lbs through eating right and exercise! Good luck and good job taking control of your problem!

If you really want to do it- Cut out all carbohydrates after 12 noon. No matter what. No sugars, pasta, potato's, bread, rice, sugary sodas,kool-aid, juices, fruit, even some veggies, like corn, and broccoli. This is not good to do for long term, but for obese people who need to lose weight, and don't have the time or patience to deal with long term diets--this is it. You can supplement the lost vitamins from fruits and veggies with multivitamins. At the age of 14 it won't hurt you at all, the less carbs before noon the better. Make sure there is protein in every meal, including breakfast. This helps to not gain more weight, because proteins mixed with carbs help slow the sugar uptake in the bloodstream (which makes you fat). Make lots of salads with lunch meats, cheese cut up in them (no croutons), a dressing like ranch or blue cheese are low carb. At your age it's hard to stay focused-but do so. THIS WILL WORK. Once you've done it for 5 days drop yourself to no more than 30 grams carbohydrates per day (at this point it won't matter when you eat them)-the fewer the faster you lose weight. Plus you'll see your hunger cravings drastically reduced. You will lose weight--When you're near your goal, slowly add a few carbs to your diet to find a balance for yourself, but keep your eye on the scale. (Usually about 80-100 g. carbs per day) This will allow you to maintain the weight loss!!

First, see your doctor to make sure you don't already have diabetes. Then visit with a nutritionist (your hospital of doctor's office should have one) and let them help you tailor a diet that meets your needs. BMI of 39 is considered obese, but you're already doing the best thing: making a decision to do something about it.

It does take a lifestyle change, which is never going to be easy. And don't expect to lose 25 pounds the first two weeks. A healthy lifestyle takes time, I'm sure it took some time for your body to build up fat, so it's going to take time, and effort, to get rid of it. Congratulations on making such a great decision. Both of my parents have diabetes and have heart conditions related to them. That's more than enough to kickstart you into a healthier lifestyle. Good luck!

Well, you are doing excellent on the exercise front! Keep it up, and try to go a couple more times a week to the gym.

Also, try and alter your diet. Cut out sweets and fatty foods, but do not deny yourself the occasional treat, say a candy bar on a Friday evening or something like that. Eat healthy portions and stop eating when you begin to feel full. Try to leave something on your plate every time. If you have to snack between meals, try walnuts, seeds and fruit.

It may well be worth joining a support group for larger ladies as well, so you can get the moral support and motivation you need to help you continue on the path to good health.

Good luck, you're doing well so far!

While jumping on the trampoline may help a little (because you arent getting the fulll workout of a gym on a trampoline), going to the gym just once a week aint gonna cut it honey. In order for the gym to give you any affects at all it is best to go 3-4 times a week. Also, of course, eat healthy. Maybe look online or in books for a diet you like.

Honey, a BMI of 39 at age 14 is not good. Very not good infact.

At 14 there are so many things that could be causing your weight problem, not just overeating and lack of excerise. You really, really need to visit your GP and have a chat. You need to make sure there's no 'problem' and that your safe to diet and excerise. The GP will either set you a safe diet/excerise plan or refer yout o a specialist to do so.

Your GP will love you for going to see him/her. They all have targets for the number of overweight people they help, and that's people of all ages.

Go have a chat. If you feel awkward going with your parents, do remember you're old enough to see the doctor on your own and make your own decisions.

Good luck whatever you choose x

Well done for being brave enough at 14 to ask for help.

If anybody makes fun of you in here, just ignore them, they dont matter and are probably sitting at home with a huge pizza, no mates and a massive gut on them!!

Please dont go on a 'diet' - they rarely work and have crappy long term results.

Try to change the way you eat for ever.

Try to make sure you always have things like yoghurts and fruit and veg all cut up, ready to eat in the fridge. This will be a huge help when you come in from school and would normally reach for hi-calorie/fat snacks before your dinner - the worst time to prepare a snack is when you are hungry cos you reach for easy foods like crisps and biscuits.

Ask your family for help. Maybe they would help you buy a JUICER? This is THE best thing ever. You can chuck in loads of fruit, even the odd bit of veg and make really nice drinks.

Would whoever does the shopping maybe get you thing like nuts and dried fruit to snack on too. I used to HATE this stuff but you can get a nice mix from health food shops or even supermarkets that contains banana chips, cranberrys, coconut etc. ( a great tip is to get a small handful and pour over a yoghurt. Tastes amazing and will really fill you up.

Try not to feel negative about this. Yes it is really hard but it will get harder to lose weight as you get older so now is the time to do it! When you are young, have family to help you and are'nt tired out from working etc.

Imagine being 30 or 40 and having lived your life not being happy with yourself. Dont you think that you will look back and wish you had REALLY tried when you were 14?

I really know what I'm talking about here. I was REALLY heavy as a child, then as a teenager, then as an adult. I was on every 'diet' going. I have tried laser treatment, pills, considered surgery and realised that it was just that I needed to change my attitude and stop looking for excuses on how I looked. Dont get me wrong, I have had a VERY happy life, have got millions of friends and never let being big stop me doing anything I wanted but I know that Ive not done my health any good and have probably shortened my life for not changing sooner.

The worst thing to do is lie to yourself. Dont pretend that 5 minutes on the trampoline is really exercise or that a packet of crisps wont hurt. Change yourself NOW before your health begins to suffer.

I think I've ranted a bit here, but would hate to think that you will end up in ill health when you could so easily stop it now.

Good Luck and keep us informed on how you're doing - we're cheering you on!!

All the best! Cheers!

great start with joining a gym - try and go a bit more than once a week if u can. does your gym have classes? if so go and try the out - really good fun and motivating and keeps u going. there's no way i would sit pedal away on the exercise bike on the gym for more than 20 mins (at a push and going slow) but a spin class gets u working really hard and its great fun. u really feel like you've worked hard, plus all the other classes u can do.

ask the gym to put you onto a good programme to help you keep on track.

and eat well - drink lots of water, try not to eat after 7 and certinaly not after 9 (assuming you're in bed by 12ish)

good luck
