I've be playing with the RC1 Beta version. Big differences are graphics, multiple desk tops, faster access to avi files. It takes a pretty stout machine for it to work well. There is also a Beta version on Office 2007. MS is trying to create an all in one package futhering thier monopoly. I run a pretty bad *** machine and it's crashed me 3 times. Hope they get the bugs out fast!

As with any "new system" Vista, which will be available soon, is not fully debugged and will have many issues. Microsoft are STILL working on XP 6 years later so you can imagine, but if you go to microsoft.com and do the virtual tour of Vista you will see the differences which are mostly designed to be more "user-friendly", the GUI have changed and the media functions enhanced. Also go to zdnet.com and peruse the articles there that will tell you about Vista. I have done it and I will admit that once they make it secure (most issues right now with Vista are security issues and because it is not widely used no one really knows how many more there will be, I'm sure more will pop up) and reliable it will be great, let's say in 2012? I know this sounds sarcastic but if you are an XP user you will understand. If you think you will buy your laptop soon I would INSIST that the vendor provide XP SP2 (if Vista is available at the time of purchase) as it will be a more stable OS than Vista. To be "fair" you have to read and investigate BOTH sides which would be the analysts/critics such as on zdnet.com and Microsoft's promotion of the product and make up your own mind. As a programmer of software I do not complain about Microsoft's practices for many reasons (it gives me work to fix problems, I use their products because after all and very often there is nothing else "better" etc) but I am always cautious with new OS because there will always be someone out there to find a flaw in anything and everything. I would ask myself this question: "Do I want to be a pioneer (read guinea pig) with Vista or upgrade to it at a minimal cost later on once it is a stabilized system?"
