Sad to say, YES, History does repeat itself. When our leaders ignore the lessons History has given us. In the end it was our young people and our churches that put a stop to the Viet Nam conflict. In Nam the lesson we should have learned was that the kind of war can not be won. Iraq is the same. They are in civil war now. Our service men are being picked off by the IDEs. Our service men do not know friend from foe. We need to get out now. Let Iraq take care of Iraq or fall for not standing up to the fight. Democracy is not a gift to be given it must be won by the blood of those that are willing to die for it. "We should not be engaged in nation building", Bush said that in debate with Al Gore, Bush has no problem with lies.

Iraq has not been known to be a country noted for democratic institutions and traditions.
Argument #1 Some point out that it is impossible to build a true democracy for a nation that did not have any. Counter-argument: Post-war Japan was a previously autocratic nation, now its a full-fledged functioning democracy.
Argument #2 It is impossible to build a democracy in an Arab or Muslim nation. Counter-argument: Consider Indonesia it is the largest muslim nation in terms of population and is a democracy.
Clearly there is no right answer here. War in Iraq represents a first: trying to build a democratic country in the Middle East, against interests of many. Will it succeeed? Who knows, but clearly we have no previous examples to rely on.
Some questions just don't have answers unfortunately

Consider this, you self-righteous boobs - those soldiers over there are all volunteers. They are there because they believe in what this country stands for. Suppose we just pulled out? How long do you think it would be before we would have to go back and finish what we should have finished in the first place? What SHOULD have been done in the early 90's, during Desert Storm! What makes you think that you know what is best? How much more do you think YOU know than the leaders of those countries that are over there trying to restore order to that country? ZIP is my guess! ZERO! Hussein is a madman, and was a torture hungry, sadistic dictator that took pleasure in only his self and his riches. He used chemical weapons on the people of his own country, for God's sake! You people are passive, liberal idiots that should go live in a place like that was during Hussein's reign of terror, and then re-examine whether or not you think that the US shouldn't be there. The Iraqi people will gain control of their own country, but until they do, they need the allied forces to help them restore order! So cry me a river.

yes it does. the media is bringing down the soldiers and changing the face of the war. they report on the liberal side of things, that means on anything that they can use to take down bush by making things out worse than they appear to be. take cnn for instance. do you agree with the reporter who was in on the assassination of an american soldier, running around with a terrorist to prove a point, what point? cnn played it on air while the reporter breathlessly narrated the assassination of an american soldier. he is a traitor and cnn should be charged with the same. or, are you happy to see the soldier die because it just somehow shows your point in the war?
yeah, the smart thing to do is listen to the media and usher in a destructive party to control washington where we can all look forward to high taxes, unemployment, more appeasement, and a giant recession. and lets not forget the countless lives that would be lost if we abandon iraq, just like the last time in vietnam. oh, and not to forget to mention that libs are playing right into the terrorists hands. they are trying to do to us, what they accomplished in Spain.........swaying an election....

When people point out that "only" 3,000 soldiers have died as opposed to the HUUUUUUGE number that died in Vietnam they sound like they will need many more to die before they are willing to consider doing anything differently. Thats just sick. The oly point that argumet makes is that you don't care about the lives of your countries soldiers.

You have to study history carefully to see the correlation we lost Vietnam mostly because of the press, negative news 24/7 like we have today. Where it is different we have a republican president. Most democratic president seems to mismanage conflicts (LBJ Vietnam) (Carter Iran) (Clinton Somalia). One great saying attributed to Ronald Reagan "of the four wars in my lifetime none came about because the U.S. was too strong." correction Vietnam about 33,000 dead

the US only lost roughly 58,000 troops in vietnam. That a considerably low number considering they were there for such a long time. And no history will not repeat itself this time because we learned from it and we know what not to do.

Yes. It sure seems that way, doesn't it. As it country, we just seem to want what we want, regardless of the cost to human lives.
Of course, we don't all agree with what's going on. But ya feel powerless to stop it sometimes.
