I know Decathalon isn't that cool - but i'm not fussed about having a branded bike. This one is reduced from £474 to £399. It's got Shimano Deore front derailleur and Shimano LX rear derailleur. 9 speed. Manitou Axel Platinum 100mm suspension forks, 160mm Hayes HFX Nine disc brakes. Weight = 12.9 kg
I really don't have a clue to be honest - i want a good solid bike that can handle off-road and help me get my fitness back. At the minute i'm just going on what looks nice.

Nothing wrong with this Decathlon (and the rest of their range of items). I lived in France for 8yrs and bought a full alu Rockrider (slightly higher spec than the one you refer to but some similarities. About £800 in 1998). Super bike! Still have it and as good as new. For the spec you mention, at the price and for your needs, I would not debate. Go for it, spend the time on the (off)road and have fun! cheers

I think the US correspondent is talking about a different Decathlon - the European brand doesn't have a prescence in the US as far as I'm aware.
I'm a relative beginner and no expert on mountain bikes. But Decathlon as a brand have a fantastic (and well-earned) reputation in continental Europe for basic but reliable bikes. I own two Decathlon bikes from when I lived abroad - a low-range hybrid and an expensive road bike. Both have been excellent purchases and made me figure out what I want next without spending a fortune. I doubt Decathlon would sell a *bad* bike.
But, if you do want good personal advice, either try a local bike shop - whose friendlyness varies wildly - or Evans Cycles who have a better UK prescence than Decathlon and can probably get you a more suited bike, though at a higher price.
Bottom line: if it is from Decathlon, is reduced to a price that seems good and looks like what you want, then yes I would buy it

I would advise you to be wary, because I don't know if Decathalon is going to last all that long as a company. All the stores in my area here in the U.S.A. (at least) are closing. If they aren't doing so good where you are, I don't think that you would want to end up owning an "orphan". BTW, over here it was spelled Decathlon.
