theres not much you can do. It could have been knocked out of place in which case you have to rest, and keep resting until it feels better

If it is bothering you maybe you could get some medical tape and wrap a some tape around your hand to hold the thumb still and maybe you bump it as must and this will help stop some of the pain. I know its almost impossible not to hit something that is sore.....it always just seems to happen no matter what you do.

It sounds as if you have stretched the muscles and tendons at the base of your thumb. As with all strains and sprains it will take a while to get better. Strap it up with an elastic bandage or sport wrist/hand support.
Sometimes applying a pack of frozen peas helps to reduce pain and swelling

Wrap it up with medical tape and baby it for awhile longer. If you can, find a splint to put around it to keep it in place. If you aren't already, take some over the counter pain reliever.

Don't worry too much, it just takes more then two days, if it's too painful rub some cream or gel on it. The pain will last around week, but not with same intensity.

Maybe you have to rest it for 3 days.

if the doc says its ok and to just rest it then thats about all you can do.
if it still hurts in a week or so then go back and ask him to check it over again

Pull it gently until you hear it pop. If its out of place that will put it back. I have done it b4 and pulling it actually eases the pain after its over with
