Hi I'm a swimmer too and I know it can be boring.

Good news however you can listen to music! They make waterproof FM radios with earplug speakers for about $40.
I have had one and it works. it is best to leave it on 1 station and tuck all the cord under your swim cap. It takes some getting used to but pulling the cap down a bit on your ears helps hold the ear plug speakers in if you are swimming in rough water.

Swimming is arguably the best exercise as you get a balanced full body workout, your lungs are working hard and you body is not taking a pounding because the water supports your weight.

Swimming has proven to not be the best exercise for weight loss. The theory is that people tend to eat more after swimming because lowered body temperature makes you hungry. This is not the case with running or cycling as you get warmer as you exercise.

That said, if one is more than say 20lbs overweight, it is probably better to start in the pool or some other low impact exercise as the weight will be very hard on your body. If you are pounding the pavement and you injure yourself you have lost the weight battle as you lie in bed recovering with nothing to do but eat.

best of luck!

Swimming is a very good way to loose weight, along with a good diet. If you want to listen to music and there isn't a wall plug to far away, before you get in, plug in a CD player or something. Just make Sure it is away from the pool. Another way to make it fun would be to get pool toys or a beach ball and play games with those. Maybe once a couple of weeks, you could invite some other friends over to swim.

yes swimming combined with proper diet is a great way to lose weight.

when I was a competitive swimmer we use to sing to ourselves...since there is not much to do in water

you can use a kick board and talk with your friend while working you legs. You can also use one arm and stroke with it on the kick board.

there is not much to do in the water

You actually can listen to music...... you can get waterproof caseing for ipods (rare but I have seen them) then you can strap your ipod onto your body and listen to it while you swim.
