You can't handle the truth!

I would not say that they are ONLY offended in this case. Some, who are concerned about their image, are offended if one says something about them that makes them look bad in front of others. This invokes their ego fear; many people do not have a strong enough feeling of self-worth or a total disregard for same to weather an untrue statement that merely suggests something that isn't true might appear true to others.

If that statement IS true, I think the person might deny it and be offended, but I also think that part of him or her would be pierced and self-examination might occur on some level. But be sure that the person is not exposed to others' scrutiny while you are telling him or her; that might lessen the chance that you'll be listened to without automatic offense taken.

I would ordinarily say no, sometimes people are capable of being more offended by the tone or the person themselves, but I've seen it too often where the person really had taken a slight bit of offense simply because the words even just a TINY bit were true to them personally.

I'm having trouble with the word "only". Could it be eliminated from your question? My take on this is that your opinion of another person (as an individual - what does THAT mean??) is subjective - it's just how YOU see them. In my experience, it's nearly impossible to fully know another person. The offence taken may well be at your assumption that you know the person in every respect and are qualified to make a judgement.

The truer your statement is the harder it is too swallow. The day that all people are able to be honest with themselves without feeling anger or guilt will be the day when we no longer need little white lies to save their feelings and our friendships. Peace.

Depends on how you say it, now doesn't it?

If you are trying to be helpful, and you manage to articulate that you care, then people listen. If you sound critical or mocking, then no one wants to hear it.

Actually in my case, it is when I am falsely accused that I become angry. Tell me something true and I'll accept it.
