I would be incined to have the heat very low and not completely off as the temperatures start dropping to the freezing level and below outside.
I have some space heaters - not with a blower but internal heated oil circulation and the cats might be a room with something like that if you have a really bad cold snap.

I wouldn't do that. October may be a cool month but it is getting really cold during the night and day, the other winter months are not going to be that way even during the day.
Cats can get illnesses if they are cold. I would also leave out a blanket for them to curl up on and be sure to have it where the sun would shine on it so it would absorb the heat that comes from the sun.
But I would leave the heat on at 70 and you will come home to a nice warm house and very happy cats.

How cold do you expect it to get inside your house. Im sure if you left out a blanket that they can climb into and snuggle together for heat. I live in Michigan and we experienced power outages in the winter time. I have 3 cats. They all climbed under the covers when it got down into the 30's inside the house. I wouldnt let the temp drop below 50 degrees on a daily baisis.

This will be my first winter with a cat in my own home. We will probably do what we did last winter, turn the heat down, but not off. That way if it gets too cold the furnace will turn on. Will keep kitty warmer and our house won't be as cold when we get home.

I'm sure they'll be fine, but if they're older cats they may not regulate temperature as well, not generate as much warmth as they may need. I'd Reccommend buying a couple "Cuddlesafe" pet warmers, you heat them in the microwave for 5 min and they stay warm for hours and hours, especially if you put them in the blankets on the bed where the cats like to sleep, or under their cat beds. that way they can lie there in warmth till you come home, and still get up and cat around during the day. check them out. They're also wonderful to heat up your own feet when you come home in the snow.. they work awesome!

Even short hair will keep them warm. They will be more than comfortable. Cats have an amazing ability to keep themselves warm in extremly cold weather. Have you ever felt your cats belly when he/she has been sleeping on a blanket? If you are worried, leave a shade open at a window. They will gravitate to the sun spot and soak in some rays.

Yes it very much ok. I my self have 2 out door cats and it has been getting into the 30s and lower at night. I of course bring them into the basement when it gets below a certain point for those who think I dont love my cats. Cats as in most animals have a natural way of staying warm w/ all of the hair they have plus they can find the warm spots. If your worried about being to cold leave some old blankets for them to snuggle.

Um....I'm thinking no. They can survive in those temperatures without succumbing to hypothermia, but here's the problem I have; 59 degrees is a bit chilly.....any warm blooded creature would have to use a lot of energy to maintain homeostasis in such temperatures. So over time, it could wear the cats down a lot. Better to just turn your heat down a bit instead of completely off.

59 is kinda chilly for kittys , I always leave my place about 70-75* while i'm gone. Yes cats have fur coats , but they can get cold too !! Just put yourself in that place .. would you like to hang out in a house all day that is 59* ?

Cats are little heaters. Their body temperature is over 100 degrees. They also are good at finding warm places. My cat borrows under the covers when he gets cold.
They will stay warm, just make sure that your home does not get so cold that your pipes freeze. Then the money that you save on heat may go into repairs.
Take care,
Troy
