It was a treat when I was a kid.
Bread & butter with sugar sprinkled on top.
Some say it sounds gross, but it really is tasty.

That was always a treat for us when we were kids too. I've introduced it to my kids and they love it. Cheap and easy.

I did that as a kid with my brothers out of hunger after school. There was no jelly or peanut butter left in the house so we toasted bread, buttered it and sprinkled sugar on top. It was delicious! I still remember the crunch(especially on the fillings) of the sugar as I write this!

Haven't thought about this in years--maybe decades. We used to eat bread (not toasted) with butter and sugar at my grandparents' house in the 1950s. My grandparents had 10 children who survived into adulthood, and, in the 1950s, all of their children still lived in the same metropolitan area. Frequently, several of the families from the next generation (or even the entire clan) would gather on a Sunday at my grandparents' home. My cousins and I (there were 64 of us) would be treated to bread spread with butter and sprinkled with sugar. In the 1970s, when my daughter was born, we were already concerned about "healthy" food choices, so we never even thought to introduce her to this treat.

I do remember, though, that I loved it as a child. Partly because it tasted good and partly because I associated it with good family time. Thanks for reminding me!

Yeah, it's great that way, as long as you toast the bread first so the butter melts. Then sprinkle the sugar on.

Try it with shortrning (not lard) and white or brown sugar, really good. My mother always had that as a treat during the war as there was a butter shortage.

Yes a treat for us too when we were kids in England. And just butter and sugar on it's own as a treatment for a sore throat - yummy!

I had that. Some kids ate bread and dripping as well. Amazing that we have an obesity problem NOW. FYI to younger readers, Dripping is animal fat that has been used to fry food. Called lard in the US>

My wife uses butter, sugar and Cinnamon. I've had it before and it's pretty good. I'd use Texas toast for that .
