A book review: “There is much in this book that is good and original. But what is good is not original, and what is original is not good.”

It means the book sucks. The author used ideas presented in other works (what is good is not original) and expanded or created new ideas that didn't work with the main theme (what is original is not good)

It means that the author of the book wrote something which in some instances wrote something good and in other instances was bold enough to attempt to be original. However, when the author wrote something good it lacked originality, in the sense that other writers had written a lot of material whih was similar in content. Also when the author decided to be bold and write something original the way in which it was written was not up to standard and thus did not compel the reviewer into reading further.
I must admit that it is a very hard book review and that the reviewer was far from complimentary to the author.

I assume that the person giving the review thinks that there is much in the book that is good NOT great because it is not original. And the parts that he finds original are not necessarily any good.

The book is rubbish; the good bits are copied from something else, and the bits that the author came up with himself are lousy.

It's like my quote, "This book shows what a little talent can do--a very little talent."

Literally, he says that the unoriginal parts are good, but he really means that they are boring and just us tell us things we already know.
