When the rich young ruler asked Jesus "What must I do to inherit eternal life", why did Jesus mention the law?

The young man went away sad, why didn't Jesus stop him and shout, "Wait!, just believe in me, and all will be better"

Jesus was just having a little fun with the kid.

Why do you call me good?

No one is good but God?

Keep the law!

Oh? Then go sell everything and follow me.

Poor baby.

The kid thought he had all the answers, when he hadn't even seen all the questions yet!

Just like most of us, when it comes to understanding God.

the RYR knew about it and yet like most, did not believe or opted not to believe; the RYR wanted eternal life his other option he know of at this point therefore his question: how to gain eternal life. Most know there is a hell but they opt not to believe that a caring and loving God could create a place like it; God did not create hell for ppl, it was created for the devil and those that do not believe or accept Jesus will end there too just look at the answers--disbelief and hate. One last thing: Christians talk about 'Jesus tells him to give away all his possessions and follow him (the contention is give up the world) . The RYR cannot do this. If Christians are really supposed to believe in eternal damnation and threaten/warn people about it, why didn't Jesus do so there? So you agree that Christians are on a "mission"--to "tell him"(others), "believe in eternal damnation and threaten/warn ppl about it' so why are nonbelievers against this 'mission' and what is their contribution to society--to 'threaten/warn ppl about it---hell or dissuade society? No one needs enlightenment from those that hate. Just saying

Because Jesus could see his heart, and said the appropriate thing for him personally.

Remember the book of Job? In Job 1:8-12, you'll see that Satan challenged God before other heavenly beings, saying that the only reason for Job's righteousness was his riches.

Here, Jesus said to the rich young ruler: it is great that you can follow all the commandments, could you do it without all your riches?

The man was blessed by this question, in that his pride was removed. This could allow him then to show genuine compassion and grace to others who fail the commandments.

Jesus wanted to see how keen he was, that is why he raised the issue of the law...when he passed it, proving that he wanted more than the law, Jesus obviously knew that he wanted the love of God...that is why He threw him with the 'sell all you have'.

It was in that instant that the young rish ruler was faced with the real question "does he really want the love of God or the love of his money??"
Jesus did not run after him because the young man made his choice, and Jesus will never over-rule someone's free-willed decision.

I hope this helps...God bless

Because Jesus knew the young mans heart and he knew that money was the most important thing. Money was his master and you can not serve 2 master. The Lord thy GOD is a jealous GOD and you will not serve any other GODS. Why didn't the man just do what he was told to do and then it would have all been better

The man wanted riches, and did not want to give up what he had. Jesus knows the heart of us all, and he knew the rich man heart as well. The rich man wasn't ready to give up everything and follow Jesus.

Jesus usually quoted scripture to answer questions. Probably so someone couldn't accuse Him of contradicting "God". Kind of funny since He was generally quoting Himself.

Anyway, Jesus didn't yell after the young man because He won't force any of us to do anything. Do you think Him arguing would have really changed anything? God lets us come to Him because we are ultimately responsible for changing ourselves.

I have no Bible handy, but I believe that you are referring to his answer of giving all away and living for God. I believe that was followed by something like '' it's easier to put a camel thru the eye of a needle, than for the rich to go to heaven. I will check further and amend my answer.

JESUS ~ never pleaded with anyone to believe in Him. He doesn't need us, we need Him. We are His (God's) children w/ free will. God tried to give us a sinless paradise in the first place, but w/ the one rule not to touch you know what, full knowing Adam & Eve would partake of what was forbidden, they now knew what sin & regret was as they fell into a sinful earth. It's not just believing in God & the Lamb, it's loving them enough to give up everything, having faith in them above ALL things, knowing that He will take care of your needs..........:o]

because Jesus knew where the man's heart was. It was with his money not with GOD.
