Religious people keep getting pushed back as science discovers more. People really have strong emotional reasons for wanting to believe that a god exists. So they keep looking for gaps in science to say, "Aha! That must be done by God!".
This is rather unfortunate, because it is in direct conflict with scientific endeavors. Scientists thrive on the gaps. That's where they get their motivation. If questions were all answered, the scientists job would be done. However, this "God of the gaps" mentality seeks to try to find holes in scientific theories, as if that's a proof that God exists. They politicize those gaps to push back on scientific research. This makes scientists less likely to want to publicize the gaps that are there that need to be explored. This is yet another way that religion puts the brakes on progress.

Gaps are like significant figures; some people don't realize they exist, so they come up with different answers than those of us who apply scientific methods. But I'll be the first to admit that science can't explain everything; neither can religion or any other human discipline!
