Hi,
I got Carrera Kraken from Halfords. Please check review that has been done by MBUK (http://www.mbuk.com/firstridedetails.asp?id=66).
They say it rides like £800 bike. Bike RRP is £399 and now it is £265 (they also give you £20 voucher). I would say better than a used one. Depending on the rider, a MTB can go through a lot of abuse!!!

You would probably have to do deals. You can get a Giant XTC from paulscycles.com for about £400.
Cape Wraths are about £400 and they are good bikes.
Depends what you are after. You can get a Scott for about £400 as well, although it will only have 8 gears. Try these sites:

have a look at brands such as specialised,on-one,scott,trek,kona and edinburgh who all offer good bikes in this area .
Have a test ride of a few and see which u prefer, also have a read of mbuk.what mtb etc for reviews.

specialized hard rock- I have the girls version. Its really good. Its a good bike to start with and is a perfect bike for up grading. My is the sport version.

for that little money, I recommend that you get a used bike. It's better to buy a used expensive bike than a new cheap bike. in my opinion

go to ebay...they have great deals man....i got a motobecane 700ht all aluminum for about $410 us bucks....great deal bike is awesome...but look around and then do some research i online after you see something you like...
