If you know what state it was in, that is public knowledge. If he/she was in prison the states correctional site will have all records online, if it's not online, then all you have to do contact them from the site or make some phone calls. If you want a detailed search, there are sites out there but it will cost you.

Depends why you want to know. If you are to be their employer, then the Criminal Records Bureau administered by your local police may help but if it is for private reasons, it is likely that the only real way to find out short of employing a private investigator is to ask them, I would guess.
