You can't make them be friends. Just let them be, and they'll figure it out. Cat's are territorial, so they'll learn to tolerate each other. If you had one cat for awhile before the other one, then it will let the other one know continuously that this is his/her house. Sometimes it just takes awhile. Just remember that if you had one cat there for awhile before you got the other, make sure you give that cat more attention than the other. Animals get jealous just like children do when there's a new baby. When the first cat goes to sleep then spend more time with the second cat.It worked for me, and I've only had the two cats together for less than a week, and they play all the time together and are inseperable. Give it a try! remember since this has went on for 2 yrs. it could take up to 6 months. It will work!

When was the last time you took them to the vet? Are they the same sex? If they are, thats your first problem. They are both trying to maintain dominance. Are you sure they are fighting and not playing? So long as there is no blood or fur loss, I wouldnt worry about it much. Make sure they are both fixed and healthy (the need for the vet) and that they have 2 water and food bowls in separate rooms preferably. After 2 years, they should be able to tolerate each other at the very least. Best of luck.

You can not make two cats get along. Sorry. But they are some what like you. If you didnt like a person and someone came along and forced you to be friends would you really like the person? So, I would say as long as the fights dont end in lots of blood and serious injuries they will both be ok. What I would do to help is give them their own spaces for things. Separate toys and food, water, bedding, and so on.

Are they fighting or playing? If two cats are really fighting to hurt each other, you'll know it; yowls, growls, hisses, screeches, and sometimes blood and fur. Cats are absolutely vicious when they truly hate each other. But cats who are playing often display body language that looks as if they're really pissed; ears flat back, tails swishing in agitation.....as long as they're not hurting each other, it's best that you stay out of it. Some cats never become closer than mere toleration, and if you end up with that, count yourself lucky. You can't MAKE them be buddies. They may get to that point in time, but there isn't much you can do to speed up the process. If they recently started living together, just give them time. Some cats take years to become friendly with each other, others never reach that point....but they sometimes fight things out to establish territorial boundaries and to determine which cat is alpha.
But like I said, if they're not hurting each other, just leave them be. And make sure that they have places to get away from each other.

If they are fighting over territory, it may be difficult to get them to be friends. Look for the more aggressive cat and scold that cat every time you see the aggressive cat strike.
Also, try playing with both of them at the same time. Get two of the toys on long leads and try to get both cats to play near each other, but independently. You might eventually be able to get them to play together and then they will be more likely to become friends.
My cat was two years old when I brought in a second cat. At first she hated him, but when she saw me petting him and holding him, she slowly changed her mind. The two of them were inseparable for 14 years until she just passed away due to cancer.
Take care,
Troy

It may not be possible. Our cats have been together for 6 years and still one of them tries to injure the other. Luckily it's a big house, but we have to divide our time because these cats just can't be together. One of them even gets Amitriptyline every day because the stress causes her to pull out her own fur. They don't even share the yard.

Make??!!! You're a cat owner and yet you don't know that it is impossible to MAKE a cat do anything. Cats do things on their own terms. You cannot make your cats like each other. The best thing you can do is make each one feel like it has its own personal space and special attention from you.

Weeelll. I guess you might have noticed, you can't really make a cat do anything.
Ever see those signs "Will work for food" They should have a sign sayin' won't work for food!
But seriously, they do so much for us.
Bet they both enjoy you're company, and theirs, much better than you might think.
Celtic people used to always put flowers on the grave of their enemy! Cause' they missed him. He made them stronger. We all need that fiesty sibbling rivalry, cat too, I guess.

You may not be able to make them be friends but they might just end up tolerating each other. A lot depends on age, sex, whether they have been spayed or neutered, and how long they have been around each other.

Bonding over a traumatic situation always works.. put them in a hot shower together. they will see each other and know that they are experiencing a difficult situation and will begin to vocally commiserate with each other. Then, when you let them out, they will dry each other off.
