I'm looking for a new SUV to buy and I've been researching everything on great mpg, safest crash test, warranty, etc, etc, etc. Anyone have a Jeep Liberty that would like to share what they think of the car.. reliability, gas mpg and anything else?

Thanks!

i own a repair shop,in Tennessee, and around here you see more jeeps than anything else, don't let other people tell you there junk because there not,, i rate a vehicle by how much i have to work on it,and the jeeps about all i ever get to do to them is tune them up,or put brakes on them, and the liberty is a real good vehicle to own and drive,i had one and sold it because i had to many vehicles, and too much insurance to pay,but i kept my wrangler jeep, all the jeep products i know of last really good these days,,and there pretty good on gas also,i think one would make you a good vehicle for many years to come god luck with getting one,i hope this help,s

As a former owner of a 2004 Jeep Liberty, I wouldn't buy another one. Gas mileage was not that great, 16 mpg at best tooling around town. Poor acceleration when you had to step on it like getting on the highway. Acceleration/MPG was even worse once you turned the A/C on. Transmission would "jerk" when you came to a stop. Took into the dealership and was told "it's a Jeep, they all do that". Couldn't get them to even take a look at the transmission.

Also, Chrysler finally admitted that the 2002-2006 Jeep Liberty's had faulty ball joints. Huge recall announced not too long ago. Front end can fall apart if the ball joints fail. Not a "warm fuzzy feeling" knowing that the front end of my car can fail when driving down the highway at 65 mph!

Traded in my Liberty for a 2006 Wrangler X. Couldn't be happier! Wrangler is getting 18 mpg around town and over 20 on the highway. Better acceleration, even the few times I did run the A/C. No jerky transmission.

I bought a 2003 Liberty Limited brand new and love it! I have never had any issues with this vehicle. The sticker does not lie regarding the gas mileage. I found the 3.7 ltr engine to be very peppy -- I went from a Camaro to the Liberty and found the pickup to be much better. It rides like a Jeep -- that is because it is one. It does not handle like any other vehicle due to the short and somewhat narrow wheelbase. It has a great turning radius and I can put it anywhere. Right now mine is for sale and that's only because I decided I had to have a Dodge Charger Hemi. Now THERE's some power!!

I agree with stormy. My wife's Liberty did a front end dive at 55 mph back in 2002. Back then, there was no such thing as the "faulty ball joint" recall. She spent a week in the hospital and was pregnant with our daughter at the time. The rub was that she even got a citation for Failure to Control.

We have owned 3 Jeep Wranglers, though. You can get a great deal on '06 Wranglers right now as the newly redesigned '07's soil the dealer's lots. They are even offering 0% interest for 60 months with good credit. If keeping it airtight is a concern to you, go for the Unlimited w/ a hardtop.

i have a diesel ltd and it is fully loaded had a 2 wranglers before and both were a piece of crap the liberty is as good off road as any wrangler and will out perform all but the very experts off road i also have a short wheel base land rover/defender and the liberty is better on all counts and is a lot more comfortable than a wrangler and better built than both wranglers are ok as a fun car where it is hot like arizona but not if you have a winter highly recommend the liberty but get a ltd not the sport ltd has all the luxury elec seats air bags/abs/stability control and traction control.and also on the move 4x4 can engage up too 45 mph on the go does not have a very big boot space behind rear seats that is the only let down but is no worse than the land rover the liberty is a good car all round

i did the same research and in 2004 broke down and bought a brand new liberty. i love it. the only problem i have had, knock on wood, is that the electrical box for the turn signals went out, but it was from a hit and run. it didn't happen on its own. i have over 70,000 miles and have only done normal maintenance. i actually just got new tires and brakes (for the first time), which i was surprised how long they lasted. the gas mileage is not the best. i get about 20 mpg whether it is hwy or in town. that is the only thing that i didn't like about it. another downfall is that it rides like a wrangler (kind of bumpy). it doesn't bother me, but might bother someone else. overall, i would recommend it to anyone.

I've been doing that same search for 2 months now. It all depends on if ya want serious off-road ability or just looking to tool around town and impress the girls. Jeep has always had a great rating for the urban ride, and they've been prominent in certain models for off-road. You can't really go wrong with the car, all i'd do is check automobile mag for the recalls and the road test. In case you were wondering, i decided on the 2007 Land Rover Discovery III. I could find nothing in it's class that compared as far as performance VS comfort. Good Luck.

If you want a "Jeep", why not get a REAL Jeep....a Wrangler. I've had several of them, and they've ALL been great vehicles. I personally LOVE how they drive and feel and look. I do recommend the 5 speed for gas mileage, but the AT is very nice, too.

Buy an estate car with a good NCAP safety rating, including for pedestrians. You will get more MPG as well. Everyone wins and you will not look like an idiot...
