I store mine in the freezer in a ziplock bag and it only takes a few seconds to start thawing and I never have clumps or hard brown sugar.

Brown sugar has the tendency to lump and become hard. To avoid this, store in a glass jar or plastic bag in a cool dry place. If is becomes hard, soften it by placing a slice of apple in a plastic bag along with the brown sugar for a few days. You can also sprinkle a few drops of water on it and seal in plastic bag for a few days.
Storage Tips
Store brown sugar in a cool dry place. Place boxes or bags in an airtight container.
Hardening is a common problem. To restore, spread on a foil-lined cookie sheet and bake for about five minutes in a 250-degree oven. You can also add a slice of bread or piece of apple – in a separate unsealed bag - to the container and leave for two days.
Brown sugar, honey, syrup and even cookies have a habit of hardening despite storage in airtight containers. Here are some tricks to soften them up.
Instructions
STEP 1: Place brown sugar in an airtight container with one or two slices of bread. Leave overnight.
STEP 2: Microwave brown sugar or honey in an open container. Cover with a damp paper towel and turn on high. Turn or stir well every 30 seconds until the sugar or honey has softened.
STEP 3: Place the container of crystallized honey or syrup in a small pan of simmering water. Heat until smooth.
STEP 4: Seal hard cookies in an airtight container with apple wedges or bread slices. Set aside for one or two days.

I soften a boulder of brown sugar by putting a slice of bread in with it-- it should be in an airtight plastic bag-- the next day, you will have soft brown sugar.

Put in in the oven for a little while, or in the microwave. Just check it often as it may melt.
Next time you purchase brown sugar and need to store it again, you can put a piece of bread in the container to help keep it soft.

Without a microwave?
Cut an apple in half and then put the halves inside the container that contains the brown sugar.

Put it in the microwave with a wet paper towel over it for a few seconds - that usually does the trick.

Put it in a plastic container with tight fitting lid. Put a slice of apple in with
it and leave overnight. In the morning it will be soft again. Dispose of the
apple slice.

A nice dinner, a couple of drinks, maybe some flowers and a foot massage... :o)
KIDDING! The microwave solution in other posts works best.
