Buy a bird feeder...or two. Hang it outside a window that you can see out clearly. Soon, you'll have plenty of birds everyday. Some may think this is kinda silly, and I agree. It is kinda silly that 'joy' is that easy to find. And we go searching for it in so many other places. Try the bird feeder. And try and tell me, a few weeks from now, that you didn't find the JOY !!!!! . . . Who's willing to TRY ??

Angel Baby - So you'd rather have beer than joy? I know you don't really mean that. Besides, for the price of a couple of beers, you could have something far more rewarding. Why don't you prove me wrong, and buy a bird feeder. Then, email me, 3 weeks from now and explain to me, how it 'didn't work'.

Oh, here I was going to come sweeping in with a cynical answer to a stupid question...and then I find out that your answer is a really good one.

I couldn't agree more. Thank you for posting this - it's the best thing I've seen here in weeks. This is what true wisdom really looks like.

Later:
Interesting how many of us share bird-watching with our cats. Mine loves the Mourning Doves, which is most of what we get here. Also Grackles, House and Field Sparrows, House Finches. I've seen Cooper's Hawks hunting in the neighborhood, and a couple of weeks ago, a hummingbird (NOT Ruby-throated...). We also get crows and Blue Jays, but they don't come to my balcony.

About 8 years ago there was a Snowy Owl eating a mouse in the gutter a block away from here. Unbelievable sight.

Already done. I got a bird feeder for my two kitties and hung it outside the back window for them. THEY got ME started with the bird watching! Unfortunately, the majority are sparrows, but I've had the occasional visit from a Cardinal couple, a House Finch couple, a chickadee, and seasonally I see a species of black bird whose name is escaping me at the moment.

While I'm not one of those who traipse into the woods with binocs, a bird journal and a book, I do enjoy seeing the different types and trying to figure out what they are.

Where I live, I wouldn't be able to do that. The neighborhood kids would either break it, or scare the birds away all the time. But I know what you mean, I used to live on farms and we always had bird feeders, especially for humming birds. They are beautiful to watch.

I've had bird feeders for years. I feed seeds in 4 feeders, suet in one, and also have 2 Hummingbird feeders during the season. That, plus cracked corn on the ground ensures that I have wildlife galore to watch. I love it!

Same.. Bottleo/bird bottleo/bird I can say this and escape unscathed I'm feeding one domestic badly trained cockatiel, not to mention the fortune I'm spending on bloody random topknot type drop-in doves.
Love, I'm talking 12 months the "JOY"is but fleeting!
Just remembered the kids as well, see ya!

I feed squirrels walnuts. They cost $5.95 a bag at the grocery store, but I think the squirrels are woth it. I'd buy a bird feeder now, but I think all the birds flew south for the winter.

I already have! My kids like watching the birds, even the "too cool " teenagers. My cats like to watch, but I'm guessing that they feel more frustration than joy!

It isn't silly to take joy in the small things in life......the big things don't come along often enough!

Mav put bird feeders out and got squirrels. Mav thought squirrels were cute until they started trying to attack us for walking on our porch.
Mav didn't find joy.

Better to get a cat - lots of joy watching her Gata stalk her shadow.

i think i'd rather spend it on beer.

Try actually being a part of nature instead of watching it from your house. Get a little dirty.
