I bought bedroom furniture that includes the the bed that is intended for the oversized mattress and box springs. Now i have a gap between my headboard and mattress. Any ideas on how i can raise it to get rid of the gap until i can afford a new mattress/foundation set?

you can go to the store and buy bed risers that fit under each leg of the frame.
try home depot, bed bath and beyond, etc.

Can you raise the support for the mattress? That would mean drilling new holes in the wood posts....You'd need both a head board and foot board. Then you'd have to fashion new legs as the frame's legs wouldn't come to the floor. We did this with one bed and used lumber for a frame to support the metal frame. It works great, the bed doesn't have the metal groans that are associated with the metal leg, BUT there is no foot space under the bed and I tend to stub my toe more often.

Then again you could get another box spring...just kidding.

The simple solution may be to plug the opening. Put a piece of 3/4 inch plywood in the back to cover the opening. First cover it with batting and a pretty fabric to make it pretty from the front?

The least expensive way to raise your bed would probably be to create a raised floor under your bed. Measure the size of the gap, which is the height you will need to raise everything up, and create a stage-like platform using 3/4" plywood and some 2X3s or whatever size wood would give you the appropriate height you need. This is a simple project that can be done in only a few hours time with the most basic of tools. Make sure you use the 2X3s (or other size wood) at 16" intervals to support the weight properly. You'll need under 2 sheets of plywood and about 10 2X3s. Then to make the visible parts of this structure look better, either paint it or staple on some fabric that coordinates with your bedding. Good luck.

My suggestion is to buy bed raisers if you really want to go cheap and creative use cinder blocks. I have used these when I didn't' have a frame it is very sturdy.
