Psychology is the study into the understanding of the human mind and behaviour , not animals as someone else mentioned here. you can use psychology to treat people who suffer from mental illnesses/phobias etc... using a wide range of approaches that suit the individual.
Philosophy is the study of life and reality. It does literally mean "love of wisdom" and is derived from Greek.

philosophy in Greek means "friends of wisdom", it was the first form of "science", when people started looking into things, trying to explain the world around them, from physical phenomenons to health issues, behaviors, the beginning of the world etc. However in todays terms it can not be considered as a science because it is mostly based on theories and logic rather than proof. in today's science proof is needed to make an argument or regulate a theory.

Psychology is the science that studies human behaviour. being in science means that it does research and tries to "prove" its arguments. we could say that psychology originated in philosophy but we could say this for all sciences because ancient philosophers elaborated on almost everything! Today philosophy is still a more theoretical field, u study all these theories that were developed through the centuries and i guess it deals with issues that science can not resolve or is not sure about :) Atheism for example could be considered a philosophical theory.

well actually today i wouldnt ask what is the difference because they are two completely different disciplines :)

Philosophy is the study of three questions: What is real? What is good? What is true? It's a very old subject.

Psychology tries to answer the question, How does the mind work? It is a relatively new field of study.

Both subjects are controversial and inexact to say the least.
