When the Irish were fleeing famine on the Emerald Isle and landing on our shores what do you suppose happened to them? Well, tens of thousands were immediately inducted into the Union Army and sent south to fight and die for the federal cause. Without those Irish the civil war may have ended a whole lot differently. Many thousands of other hard-working Irish went into the coal mines and provided the energy to power the industrial revolution. Many Irish became police officers and firemen. And they blazed the trails across this great continent fullfilling the politicians dreams and schemes of "manifest destiny." And the lists of contributions of Irish Americans would fill entire libraries.
