Muslims inherited this greeting from the Jews and Judaism. Jews say SHALOM AND MUSLIMS SAY SALAM. It's all religious bonkers.

Shabash is wrong. Shalom and Salaam both mean peace. The reason they are similar is not because one nicked it from the other. Arabic and Hebrew are both Semitic languages and there are therefore similarities. If one says in English 'Good-day', this does not mean that it was knicked from the German 'Guten Tag.'

The word ISLAM is based on the tri-literal root SLM which in arabic means "to be in peace". Thus we have SALAM - Peace (hebrew - shalom). Islam - is peace through the surrender or submission to God, and Muslim- one who is at peace through the submission to God.

Salam is short of Assalamo aleikom , Persians mainly use it rather than Arabs and it simply means hello.
