I live in an area where there are a lot of different ethnic groups, and have pretty much grown up with Muslims.

I live where there is a noticable asian community with lots of ethnic groups. I agree with Jack Straw that it is uncomfortable when they chat to you wearing a veil.

Over the weekend a paper had a front page saying in some Arab countries they were outlawed so why do we put up with it here?

It's one of those issues where you know if the government banned them it would just cause yet another arguement with muslims. I'm a bit fed up of hearing about muslim issues really, it's constantly in the headlines.

The problem most people see is that when we go abroad to some muslim countries we are told not to wear or to wear certain clothes due to the nature of the community we are visiting so why can't we do the same and state the same here in the UK.

Don't get me wrong I'm not racist at all but I don't see what the harm would be exactly to ask that it not be worn. The government is trying to promote integration and the way I see it the wearing of a veil (or even full asian dress) can sometimes do the complete opposite. France banned asian head wear in their schools and I've not heard of much since then. Why can't we ask the same?

Also, why is the governement bending over backwards to please everyone coming into this country and at the same time putting our backs up. The UK is generally too soft.

I think that if its something the Muslim women feel they need to do then they should do it (wear the veils).
It's peoples misunderstanding of why they wear the veils to why they fear it, because for them to question the veils wearing as being unacceptable shows their is a fear to some people in our society and that is understandable. It comes down to the terrorist attacks because i cant ever remember it beings questioned prior to the last 6-7 years.

Headscarves are fine.
Veils are pushing it...

Thats the short version of my opinion.

The longer version includes various rants about culture, adaptation, what is acceptable when moving from one country to another, identity, the willpower of men and.... well... loads of crap like that.

In any case, it doesn't much matter anyway. Whether its about veils or terrorism, Islam is generally going to be a pain in the **** about it. Muslims all over the place start screaming discrimination the moment someone notices a stain on some person's clothing.... and yet its perfectly acceptable for them to go about, f**king people over however the heck they wish. They've got the worst case of double-standards I've ever known.... and I honestly believe that every Muslim with less than two British generations behind them should be kicked the hell out of this country and sent back to the Middle East or wherever they originated (in the case of Whitechapel, which I'm intimately familiar with, they should be sent back to Bangladesh).
This country shouldn't have to conform to them. They should conform to it.... or get lost.

Honestly, I believe that they should be able to wear them if they want to. That is their beliefs and I wouldn't want someone to try and change mine. There shouldn't be people in this country trying to tell anyone how to dress. We had to many people die to keep freedom alive and everyone should benefit from that. If people have a problem with the women wearing veils, they need to mind their own business. Besides, I bet their wives would benefit the rest of us from wearing them, maybe they should try it. There is no room for hate and that is what those people are doing by trying to tell Muslim women how to dress.

With that teacher, IF there were any deaf children in the classroom, how can they lip read, when all they can see is her eyes. Terrorists could hide under the veil.! It's not nice to talk to someone through the letter box is it? British men/women have to remove crash helmets & baseball caps when going in the coop to get a pint of milk. In their own country it's ok, but over here. Live by our rules & laws if they want to stay. Some countries Brits visit we are not allowed to consume alchohol, & we abide by this.I am NOT racist either

People don't know the significance of veil wearing, it extends back to very ancient times. Nowadays people forget what is the original purpose of wearing a veil. In fact it is a respectful custom.

There's no need to debate such things, as different cultures has different roots and aspects of beliefs.

I am not sure why it bothers people and why they need to debate it in the first place. What harm did I cause the world when I freely decided to obey my God and wear the hijab? I do not interfer in people's choices or keep nagging about them. I need to be treated as I treat people.

Pepzi: should non-muslim foreign women be forbidden to wear mini skirts and sleevless tight bodies when they are in muslim countries?

Peace.

It is a non-issue. All over the planet women wear what they want to wear.

The Fashion Police have gone a little too far. Don't they have something better to do?
