Because that is what Beagles do.
Beagle rule #2 Never leave a Beagle loose in the house alone, they will eat it.
Crate training is invaluable with a Beagle.
There is a reason that Beagles coined the phrase "chow hound", and quite franklly I'm suprised that you are not complaining about the dog eating the kitchen floor. They have one of the best noses in the buisness and they will find the exact spot that food was spilled on,,,,,,,,,,, a year ago.

It is called crate training, and it is why all the books and trainers stress its importance. It is easiest to crate train a dog from puppy, but it is still possible to do as an adult. The importance of the kennel is as much to prevent destructive behavior as it is to help with holding their going to the bathroom. Get a book on training an adult dog, or I am sure you can find a link for it somewhere. It will first prevent him from being able to get to anything to chew up, and it also helps with his separation anxiety by feeling more secure and safe in his kennel while you are away. Please take this lesson before it gets serious. My sister has a beagle with separation anxiety, a couple weeks ago he tore up the carpet in her apartment while she was at work because she did not listen to us about kennel training him. Good luck.

Beagles are a highly social breed of dog. They need almost constant companionship. Left alone they will bark incessantly and tear stuff up. If you cannot be with your beagle all the time either arrange for a dog sitter or get another dog to keep him company.

More then likely he's missing his family. What types of things is he chewing up? Something that would have alot of the 'family scent' on it? Or just trying to ask for attention? Perhaps leaving some music on or something, won't make him feel as if everyone left.

Boredom/anxiety. Was told with my 1st to get another one for company.
Still come home now & again & things are chewed but thats dogs for you.
Put the stuff they like to chew out of the way.
Plenty of excercise to tire them out.
Mine are in the kitchen when out so secure all food.
2 of mine worked out how to open the fridge & freezer drawers so had to put decorative weights up against fridge door.
Beagles love em to bits. Never a boring moment

It's called "Separation Anxiety" he thinks yer leaving him forever. try walking out the door and coming right back. Let him know you're not going to abandon him. leave a radio or the TV on for comfort and leave a chew toy for him. Just do little things to let him know you will always be back.

He may have separation anxiety and that is his way of dealing with it. The best way to protect your things is to crate him. Depending on how long you are going to be gone that may be the most effective way. However, you might want to talk to your vet to see what can be done if you have to be gone for longer periods of time. I have a Rat Terrier and luckily for me that chewing faze lasted only a month or so...now he just sleeps until we get home.

He suffers from seperation anxiety. It seems that most/all beagles do that. I have one and he has 2 other dog in the house with him but he would rather be with his people than with the other dogs.

He misses you. It sounds stupid, but if you scold and hit the object while he watches, he will be less likely to chew it while you are gone. Do provide other materials to chew on, because he will need something to replace the no-no's.
