I was going to give a detailed answer... but this question is so dumb. Leash, problem solved. That is why there are leash laws on the books. Second choice, standard or invisible fencing. Third choice, build a run or a tether in the back yard. Are you really serious you could not figure this one out on your own?

Build a fence. Really, this could be dangerous. Or get him out on a leash, but it will be nicer for him to have an area where he can be free. If you can't build a fence at the entire facade, put a door between the front and the back yard, and get him to the back yard with a leash, close the door and let him loose in the back yard.

Let me get this straight: You let your dog out the front door off leash and it runs away. Well, duh.

The best option to stop this is a leash.

The second thing to do is to work with a friend to teach a solid recall (coming when called). Failing that, if you can at least teach your dog sit, then you can walk up to it and put it on the leash.

If instead your problem is gate crashing, and your dog darts out the door every time it is opened, then make your dog drag a six foot leash around all the time. When he makes for the open door, stomp on the leash. Problem solved.

Use a leash. Its called being a responsible dog owner. Unless you don't care if your dog gets hit by a car, shot by the neighbor or ate by another off-leash animal.
