The Muslim calendar is established by the cycles of the moon. The advantage of this calendar is the months fall in all kinds of seasons and vary between regions of the World.

If a solar calendar was followed for example, perhaps Ramadan being the ninth month would always fall in September and the Hajj season will always fall in Winter or December, the last month. Now if you lived in Australia, it will always fall in the Summer season as it is south of the equator as in all countries south of the equator.

But because of the lunar months, the weather keeps changing. So you get to fast for Ramadan in Summers and winters two times in your life time (if you live to 70 or more years in age). It takes about 33 years for the seasons to repeat as each lunar year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year or three times in one century.

The crescent becomes our calendar keeper for the month, while the Sun becomes our daily clock to keep the prayer times. As the Prophet rightly said, we Muslims use the moon to keep our months and perform various worships in various months using the moon including the fast of ramadan. We use the sun to determine the time of the day for our daily prayers. We can pray anywhere on the earth so we use the Earth to worship the Almighty. AND we use the stars to determine the direction of the Kaaba to orient our prayers in that direction.

We also use our entire bodies to worship our creator. We pray some prayers loudly and some under our breath. So, we use the entire gamut of the universe, our bodies our voices and our spiritual awareness to worship God.

Plus the praying people of the World form concentric circles of worshippers creating a great and alive scupture which is strewn across the globe worshipping the Almighty. At any given time one of the five prayers are being performed in the World, thus allah is being worshipped all of the times.

Moon ultimately keeps time for us. The crescent begins our month, and when the moon is full we know that it is the middle of the month. Then the moon begins to reduce in size as fewer days in the month are left until the moon vanishes and the month ends. It is all very beautiful if you think of it.

I hope this answers your question.

There are few main calenders, 360 day a year 12 months 30 days each(old Egyptian {Solar?}).

Solar calender, 365 days plus adjustments, this is the calender mostly use for commerce and travel(railways ,airline...)

Lunar calender. Hindu, Muslims,Jewish...........mosty first day of the month is, "NEW MOON".

According to Muslim Calender last month is, Ramadan(some in India call it Ramzan). All first day of the month starts with rising of the moon, in Mecca/Medina area. Usually 28 days but (actual is 28 1/4 approximately).

EID is the first day of the year and so to be true to the Calender they wait for the appearance of 'NEW MOON", this allows for over all adjustment for the year. In effect 13 moon rise is the New year day.

The location(Mecca/Medina) is not only holly but very practical, being in the desert the Skys are almost always very clear and observers can most of the time, see a very faint Moon that rises on New Moon day. The year they cannot observe the Moon due to clouds(rear), gets adjusted next year.

They are following true twelve month cycle for Lunar calender.

Hindus Add days and Subtract day to adjust their calender to coincide with solar calender. They have actually combination Solar -Lunar calender. The new year falls any time between early October to late November.

Are you refering to the Islamic Thanksgiving (
EID-UL-FITR is celebrated on the first day of Shaw'waal, at the completion of Ramadan. Shaw'waal is the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. The Eid-al-Fitr is a very joyous day; it is a true Thanksgiving Day for the believing men and women. On this day Muslims show their real joy for the health, strength and the opportunities of life, which Allah has given to them to fulfill their obligation of fasting and other good deeds during the blessed month of Ramadan. )

The only thing I can figure is that it represents the new (year, beginnings etc)

As you know being as muslim the one who obeys GOD only and the islamic calendar is LUNAR. God commanded in Holy Quran to sight the Moon to begin the month of fasting and end the fast on sighting of the Moon. The reason is the unlike Sun it rise from EAST the Moon rise from Middle East. So the nations whoever see the Moon has to follow the command of GOD to begin or end the Islamic month. Unlike Sun that got the fixed timings to rise and set, Moon doesn't that is why some nation see the Moon first and some may be day latter, so it is a matter of a day or two and thus following the way of Prophet and the command of GOD.
