"LOL" stands for laugh(ing) out loud.

It does have it's origins in text messaging. When you want to type fast and not use a lot of space, standardized abbreviations help.

Similar words are ROFLOL (rolling on the floor laughing out loud), ROFLMBO (rolling on the floor laughing my but off)...many, many more!

nowadays, LOL means 'laugh out loud'. It used to go on the end of text messages, meaning 'lots of love'.
