Mary Magdalene was one of the most faithful followers of Jesus. She is mentioned often in the New Testament gospels about Jesus. Jesus exorcized demons from her at one point, probably at the beginning of her relationship to Jesus. She is seen at the tomb on the day that Jesus was resurrected from the dead. She is the first one that Jesus appears to on that day.

The name "Magdalene" is in reference to the region that she came from- the town of Magdala, located north of the town of Tiberias along the western shore of the Sea of Galilee and south west from Capernaum, along the shore. The name "Magdala" is derived from the Hebrew word "tower".

The legend that she and Jesus had an affair and that she bore his children and all the other nonsense of the DaVinci Code is PURE fiction.

Having been in the ministry for many years, I can say that Mary represents a number of women who, in their devotion to Christ, are the true workers and back bone of many of churches and Christian organizations. I don't think it should be any wonder that Christ appeared to Mary Magdalene first.

NIV: Mt 27:56
56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
NIV: Mt 27:61
61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
NIV: Mt 28:1
28 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
NIV: Lk 8:2
2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out;
NIV: Lk 24:10
10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.
NIV: Jn 19:25
25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
NIV: Jn 20:1
20 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.
NIV: Jn 20:18
18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

She was a disciple without the formal title. She was not the prostitute many believe her to be, that was an entirely different woman. One of the early popes started the story that she was the prostitute in order to discredit her, had to discredit her to keep women from having any power in the early church. Mary Magdalene was not His lover or His wife, she was a devout follower who was so esteemed, she was the first to see Him after the crucifiction.

The first person to preach Jesus and Him resurrected was a woman, named Mary Magdalene.

Matthew 28
1In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

2And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

3His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

4And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

5And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

6He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

7And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

Probably from the town of Magdala, she grew great faith in Jesus when he expelled 7 demons from her.
Together with Joanna the wife of Herod's man in charge, Susanna, and other women, Mary Magdalene continued ministering to the needs of Jesus and his apostles out of her own belongings.
She even tended to Christ's needs after his death, and was one of the ones that heard the angel say Jesus was not in the tomb.

She was not Jesus' wife as claimed, but was instrumental and useful to him.

She was a woman cured of Demonic possession by Christ. Most likely an actress. She was also called the Woman with the alabaster jar as it is believed that she was the woman who anointed Jesus. She also was the first to discover He had risen.Although not an official Apostle she is often called the Apostle to the apostles.

She was a prostitute. The Bible said she had 7 demons. She asked for Jesus' forgiveness for her sins and He gave it to her. She loved Jesus and became one of His followers.
