is it out of the norm for an airport immigration officer at the port of entry (passport check) to discuss your country's (other than U.S) political structure and religous history?

Immigration officers are people too. It may be that particular officer was truly interested in what you thought. It is also possible that it is a technique for determining if a person is from where they say they are.

Maybe he finds his job a little boring and just wants to have a chat with someone...regardless of whether the line is long or not.
Since anyway he has to clear the line eventually...

I don't think it is wise/appropriate for immigration officers to chat to random travelers. I believe they are told not to do that too...but once in a while, they might feel the need to discuss some stuff.

Are you from a country that has a long and glorious history of false passports in the hands of terrorists?
