its a round soft teacake type thing, mainly eaten in UK made from yeast, flour sugar, salt, water and an egg, mixed together and backed in ring cookie cutters (and largish diameter tine will do, 3-4 inches is about right)
The yeast causes air bubble to form in the mixture and this gives it the 'holey' texture and when you spread a knob of butter on top when they're still warm makes a very enjoyable if slightly messy to eat snack

They are what Americans call "English Muffins".

However in England that are normally served hot off the griddle with butter and marmalade or jam.
