I'm sorry, why are we talking about this instead of drinking beer? All I know is you are wasting valuable hand energy typing instead of wrapping it around a frosty mug handle.

It actually depends on the season. Removing ice either way will require the freezer to make more ice. Opening the door will require more energy to re-cool the freezer air. So far so good. When the refrigerator operates to make ice or cool air, the refrigerant compressor motor consumes electric power (and gives up heat to the room) and the heat removed from the water to make ice or cool air is rejected to the room via cooling coils on the back or bottom of the unit. If the unit consumes say 500 watts while running, it will add 500 watt-hours of heat (like an electric heater!) to the house every hour of operation. In the winter, the house heating furnace will need to run less often but in the summer, the air conditioner will have to run more often. In the winter the savings will depend on whether the house/apartment is heated by gas, oil or electric heat. In the summer the the air conditioner likely consumes electric power. Assuming that generating electric power harms the environment, there is less harm (caused by taking/dispensing ice) in the winter than in the summer and only a little more harm by opening the door.

Yeah, I think the difference is nominal as far as the environment is concerned. If you are really worried perhaps you should eliminate the use of ice all together and just go caveman style.

using the ice dispenser as your using more energy.
The more electrical appliances = the more electrics = warmer house.
Also energy used for ice dispenser is greater than that of re-cooling the freezer and re-heating the room.

Stop drinking Scotch. That way, you won't need ice. Bourbon straight-up is the most environmentally friendly choice.
