Abreva, if you go with over-the-counter medication. Also, if you take Lysine (in the vitamin section) during a cold sore it will speed healing time. Once the cold sore is gone, continue to take Lysine daily to prevent cold sores from coming back. The more you can dry the sore out, the better. Apply Maalox or other liquid antacid, rather than camphor which can burn the skin. Something that really helps is whole milk (has to be whole milk), poured onto some Kleenex or cotton balls and applied directly to the cold sore every few hours. The lactic acid in whole milk is an aid in speeding the healing time. Ice also helps in the very beginning. If you tend to get very swollen lips from cold sores, sleep slightly propped up at night as this will prevent excess fluid settling in your already swollen lip. Also, make sure you toss your toothbrush once your cold sore is gone and get a new one.

Abreva does work wonders. It is anywhere from $10 - $15 dollars a tube depending on where you get it. Wal-mart is the cheapest place I've seen it.
But it's worth the price because it actually works. And, the tube will last a long time.
It'll probably still take a few days for the sore to go away completely though.

I use Carmex in the jar not the tube. It cost $1.29. As soon as it starts itching apply this and it is gone in a day or two.

I personally have never had one but my sister gets them and she uses alchohol! I know it hurts but she gets rid of them quickly.
