I suffered from that too. All started with a depression, then things slowly deteriorated. First I avoided tunnels, then trains, then crowds, etc.
I always got a panic attack when I felt uncomfortable.
Then one day, I sat at home on my sofa and I got a panic attack there. Just like that.
Then I knew I was not even safe at home.
I started to see a psychologist who first of all helped me with my breathing. You can really learn how to breath right and therefore prevent those attacks. Then he showed me that a panic attack is nothing serious, no one ever died of such an attack. they are just very scary, but they go away.
Also I started to do more sports: walking, cycling, horse-riding. You have to take little steps and take professional help, too.
Today, I am still a bit scary (I refuse taking elevators and still I hate big huge crowds), but my life really changed.
I am not a prisoner anymore, the world is beautiful and needs to be explored by you.
There is help, there is a future, you can also overcome your fears.
It is also important that you reward yourself with nice things, when you managed to tackle a task. Good luck, all the best for you. you will see, every day is a little miracle and as soon as you start, you will improve step by step.

I would suggest the best way to overcome such a disorder would be to do things step-by-step, starting with small things. For example, set a small challenge for yourself, complete it, then set a slightly harder challenge. Get your confidence up by successfully completing relatively easy tasks at first. This will build up your confidence and will get you talking and socialising on a small scale. You'll be surprised that as the challenges get harder, you won't notice too much. Jumping in at the deep end would be too daunting, so gradually work your way to that point at your own pace. Having said that, you must keep challenging yourself and you can't become dormant. You need that constant feeling of success to drive the progression.

I am not a doctor of any kind, this is just my opinion. Do not take this as bible truth...it's just a little disclaimer, I am sure you wouldn't anyway!

Have you been diagnosed by a physician. If so, he should have discussed some medications that help deal with social phobia:

Beta-Adrenergic Antagonists (Beta Blockers)
e.g. propranolol, atenolol
useful on an as-needed basis for 'performance'/situational anxiety

Benzodiazepines
e.g. Ativan (lorazepine), Xanax (alprazolam)
useful on an as-needed basis for 'performance'/situational anxiety

Antidepressants
SSRIs: Prozac, Paxil, Luvox, Celexa, Lexapro
useful for recurrant/chronic anxiety and depression
MAOIs: Nardil, Parnate
RIMAs: Manerix
SNRIs: Effexor - XR

I hope this helps you.

Yep. Genocide.
Kill all the people you're anxious about and your problem will be solved.

To be totally serious though... why are you even concerned? That is to ask... why do you even care enough about people to be anxious?
They don't really matter at the end of the day, any more than you do. There isn't any ultimate consequence to your actions... Everything you do is forgotten sooner rather than later... so why fret?

Only once you realise that nothing you do matters can you have the freedom to do whatever you like... to step forward and take a chance, because no matter what might "go wrong"... it will be forgotten in no time...

*Shrugs*

People = Sh!t anyway. Slipknot got that much right.
No point giving a damn what any of them think of you.

There are breathing techniques to help. Breathe in slowly through nostrils, hold, then breathe out slowly through mouth. This is calming technique. There are drugs like klonapin that counteract panic attacks. (Another visualization that helps if you feel intimidated by other people is to imagine them without clothes on.) All of these techniques have worked for me.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Prozac can help to relieve physical symtoms but needs to be combined with therapy.

get around people and stay away from animals(pets and the stuff) because you'll prefer them than people.
