It is a dry pork sausage, sold in Italy in a chain of 4 or 5 pieces. Each one is one inch diameter and 3 to 3 and a half inches long. The meat is cut very coarsely, and it is almost as dry as salami. You normally used in stews or such, or skinned and cut in chunks with a light tomato sauce and pasta
