I was on a business trip to Chicago and was amazed at the way some bars were ID-ing people who were obviously over 50 and others didn't seem to ask at all? If it is the law and enforced I'ed expect all of them to do it, if it is not the law then why are they so stupid?

Certain jurisdictions require identification of everyone so they do not discriminate against the young or old alike. Can you imagine? But, they do what they have to do to stay in business.

It is the law that you have to be 21 years old to purchase alcohol in this country. Even though you are obviously over 21 you still have to be able to prove that you are of legal age if asked. Some resturants ask everybody for ID because it is discriminatory to
ask some and not all ( or so some resturant managers think).
By asking everybody that wants to drink alcohol you are 100% sure that you have not accidentaly allowed someone under the age of 21 to purchase alcohol just because they look older than they actually are.

That does seem very odd. Even odder would be the worry about discriminating. That's the whole point of ID-ing them in the first place!

Were any of the bars close to schools or colleges at all? I've known it to be the case that bars near schools have to ID everyone, simply to make absolutely certain no students get in.

all bars card to ensure the customer has a valid state issued id stating they're at least 21, but some bars encourage their staff to card if someone looks 35 or younger. This leaves enough cushion for the employees who aren't as experienced at recognizing a minor trying to drink. the bars that were not carding are being irresponsible, or they haven't been slapped on the hand by a police sting yet....

Bars are supposed to ID anyone they think is under 21. Some bars ID everyone because they are worried that someone might slip up. Others trust their bartenders to make sure that no one under 21 is served.

I know that in the state I live in, any person in a drinking establishment "must" have a picture I.D. on their person to be admitted lawfully in to the place. Now that doesn't mean everybody gets carded. It just means that if the police wanted to get snooty, they could ticket anyone regardless of age that did not have said I.D.

its because somebars might not be doing well and need money so if lets say a teen comes in and says their 21 they give them a drink just because of how the business is doing.
