I think it depends on the person.

I have known Humans with cleft pallet or deformed noses, who received surgery and it boosted the self esteem.The same is true for accident victims.

It is important to note the often time the catalyst for the mental health issues are usually insensitive Humans who may or maynot know any better, and have mental health issues of their own, that results in making mock or bulling the person.

Ultimately the way someone views themself is within that person, as looks are relative and subjective.

Well, I can tell you that I had a tummy tuck seven years ago, and it made me MUCH less crabbier in the mornings -- trying to find something to wear that I felt good in was impossible before it. I'm really not that vain --but I notice when clothes don't fit well and it used to make me very self-conscious. Now, that's one less thing to concern myself with! If you can afford plastic surgery, I say go for it.

And then its typically not boosting mental health so much as making it 'average'. Of course, there are other means of boosting self-esteem to raise "mental health" that don't cost ANYTHING...
