A friends system has some really bad errors and needs reinstall of XP. Problem is the system came from a company preinstalled. The recovery disk is unavailable. I want to install my copy of XP and use his COA details on the case.

1-Will it work?
2-Is it OK by Microsoft?

Try this first before you do a reinstall,

System Restore using Windows XP

Left click on Start
Left click on All Programs
Left click on Accessories
Move mouse pointer over System Tools
Left click on System Restore

Follow the instructions and pick a restore date when you did not have
the problems you are now having.

Good Luck

If you can't find the System Restore icon in the Windows menuing system do this,

Left click on Start
Left click on Run
Left click on Browse

Double left click on Windows
Double left click on System32
Double left click on Restore
Double left click on rstrui.exe
Left click the OK button.

Have fun but be safe!

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe

If these do not work then try this,

Windows XP Repair Installation

At some point you may need to repair the installation of Windows
XP. This is preferable to a clean install in many cases since it
attempts to only repair your copy of windows without having to
delete all the files on your computer first. In many cases a
repair installation is enough to fix the problem. A repair install
deletes the files normally installed by windows XP and then
reinstalls them off the disc. A repair install will not rebuild
your computer's registry, delete applications and user settings,
or fix problems caused being caused by a program.

1. First you have to boot the computer with the Windows XP cd in
the cd tray. You will see a black screen and it will ask you
to press any key to boot from the cd so press the spacebar
and your computer will boot from the CD.

2. After a moment you will be taken to the Windows XP Setup
screen. Though the second option says to repair do not press
R. Instead press enter to select the setup for Windows XP.

3. Next, you have to accept the license agreement from windows.
Once you've done that it will search for your existing
installation of windows.

4. Once it has finished detecting the installation you need to
select the XP installation you want to repair. You can repair
the installation by pressing R. If you don't see the repair
option you will need to do a clean installation. Your version
of windows may have been damaged in a way that it cannot carry
out a repair.

5. Setup will then copy the files it needs to the hard drive and
reboot the computer. A message will come up asking you if you
want to boot from the cd, don't press any keys and just let
the timer run out. The set up will continue and look like is
doing a clean install but all of your applications and
settings will be intact when it finished.

An important note is to not activate your windows over the
internet right away. Always enable the XP firewall to protect
yourself.

When all else fails reinstall from scratch.

use your disc and number it will work but might cause probs if your both on microsoft update at same time or get adodgy copy of winxp that does not need validating. this allows you you to get security updates but not optional updates like mediaplayer or on the other hand you could buy a legal copy from amazon or ebay if you decide to go the this road i recommend amazon for a full version or an upgrade downside of upgrade is you need another version of windows handy be it a disc or on pc hdd . as it may not work with your version of xp. what bill gates doesnt know wont hurt him. or you could try going to manufacturer website and see if you can download a new recovery cd some of the larger pc companies provide this service but you may need pc details model number date of purchase etc. GOOD LUCK

No, not a good idea. You will be better of going to the Microsoft web site and getting a download from there. As you have the original COA there shouldn't be a problem. They also have a help desk, which I have used, and it is remarkably helpful for such a large organisation. God, I'm not praising Bill Gates am I?

it would want to in difficulty-free words no longer be carried out in case you care about it being criminal or no longer. I somewhat have taken an XP CD from a sparkling Dell from paintings and function put in it on over 20 machines and it truly works because it does on the unique. It asks for no key and not in any respect must be activated. So flow for it in case you want. i do not comprehend what XP CD those persons were given or from the position notwithstanding it my do not act as there is does. Who cares about the billion dollar Microsoft business business enterprise license violation. provide me a damage!!!!! It also works with Vista, workplace 2003 and workplace 2007. a similar key and no subject activating them extra then once. Burnt copies paintings besides too, emblem or no emblem. Who cares !!!!

The copy is dependent on the hard drive number registered to it; so it would be illegal.
